Flanders Red-style Ale-Known as the ”Burgundy of Belgium”, this decidedly wine-like beer is a blend of acetic/tannic/sour dark beer, extensively aged on local alder wood, and young sour beer. The delicate balance of tannin, sweetness, lactic and acetic sourness, wood, and grain is the crowning jewel in the career of a brewer. Alaskan wheat, wood, and microflora make this OUR Burgundy!

a really neat beer, dont come in expecting this to be a classic flanders type, its unique to this place, a cool riff on the style but definitely something a little different, subtle in a lot of ways, but it really rewards the patient and contemplative drinker, i was super impressed with this one. medium amber color here, a low glow, and a short lived three quarters of an inch of khaki head, low viscosity. the nose is super cool, its acetic up front and sour enough to make my mouth water, but it doesnt hit like red wine vinegar as the style often does for me, its woody and grounded, alder wood is a neat introduction, decidedly different than oak in this application, less vanilla and tannins, more earthy and lumber character, unique for sure. the malt has some caramelized sweetness, some kilned type depth, raisin and light smoke, hazelnut, honey, really compelling, dried red berries. the flavor is sour all the way through, some red wine notes through the center but also cranberry. freeze dried raspberry, and some hearty breadiness from the grain. i get some light bretty type funk in here too even though the bacterial aspect drives it, just enough late sweetness for it to be balanced. definite citrus, golden raisin, apple cider, fig, and leather, great acidity, mild carbonation, quite sessionable. really cool with the alder wood, indigenous funk, neat!

Turnagain just finished a new batch of Spenard 2 weeks ago, and I got a 2-liter growler directly from the brewery. The brown color doesn't suggest a Flemish sour but the aroma certainly does! Likewise the taste delivers a small amount of Brett and a larger amount of the alder and oak he uses for aging, along with a solid malt base and moderate lactic sourness. Everything blends well yet can be easily tasted separately. It has a medium body and short finish thanks to the new lactic sour overtaking the aged.
