Formerly known as Nightfall
Dark as a moonless night but still as drinkable as your favourite
lager. Toffee, pumpernickel, and a touch of cocoa on the nose.
Coffee cake and toasted hazelnut follow. Snappy finish

Poured a 355ml can into a pint glass. A one finger tan head on a very dark, almost black. The head diminishes to a layer. Some stringy lacing.
Coffee in the nose.
Slightly burnt toast up front with coffee bringing up the rear.
Smooth. Moderate body and carbonation.
A fine dark lager.

a trendy style in North America, and many have made quaffable. This one, found at the LCBO, has a fast disappearing mocha head. A lot of alcohol greets the nose, along with some horse recognition. It is malty sweet, but harsh. Turpentine off taste and lingering on.

355 mL can from the LCBO; dated Nov 1 2023 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a deep worn-bronze colour; good clarity, with crimson red highlights when held to the light. One inch of frothy, light tan-coloured head wilts over the next four or five minutes, soon worn down to a tight collar and filmy cap; a half-inch, interrupted band of lace adheres to the glass. Malt-forward aroma, consisting of toasted rye bread, sponge toffee and cocoa powder, with faint suggestions of something akin to berries or orchard fruit.
Interesting flavours - the finish in particular has a unique, vaguely fruity flavour that I can't quite put my finger on. I'm tasting pumpernickel, cocoa and caramelized sugars, with mild roastiness developing by mid-sip. Finishes with cocoa and dark fruit - fig, blackcurrant, or cherry cola, perhaps? Malty-sweet aftertaste of sourdough and dark fruit that lingers momentarily before trending off-dry. Medium in body, with gentle carbonation that softly agitates the palate; feels smooth and a little silky on the tongue. Exceptionally drinkable even at 5.7%.
Final Grade: 4.04, a noteworthy A-. Nightfall is not the most traditional Czech dark lager I've ever come across, but then again, I haven't reviewed all that many examples of this style in the first place. Its flavours are rich without being too saccharine, while the enticing aroma and satisfying mouthfeel further add to the experience. Another strong effort from Avling - I'm right on the edge of this brewery's distribution footprint, so I rarely see much of their stuff available locally, but I'm at the point where I'm willing to buy their products on sight - no questions asked.

355ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for $3.95CDN. Canned November 1, 2023.
Appearance - Chestnut brown beer with some clarity and topped with three fingers of foamy light tan head. Pretty good head retention too.
Smell - Roasty aromas, hints of dark chocolate and a slight sour fruity aroma too. Maybe currants?
Taste - A bit of dark chocolate and roasted malts with some dark bready aspects blended in. A touch of sweet fruitiness at the close.
Mouthfeel - Medium-full bodied, a bit creamy with just enough carbonation. Very drinkable.
Overall - Rather solid Czech Dark Lager, that matches up quite well with anything else sold locally.
