This Bavarian-style hefeweizen is made with a traditional decoction mash and naturally carbonated. The dense, fluffy foam swells with aromas of banana, white wine, and subtle spice. The palate follows with notes of perfectly ripe banana, lemon zest, and fresh baked bread lingering endlessly.

Formerly known as "Tributary".

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a weizen glass. From Small Batch Dispatch's July '25 curation. No date stamp or lot number. My 10th beer from the Toronto, Ontario brewery, and 2nd for 2026. Graciously appreciated by Gracie the cat...

355 ml can served cold into a hefe glass. Review from notes.

Appearance - Hazy golden color with orange hues. A finger plus of tight white head with excellent head retention.

Smell - Banana and clove with a healthy dose of bread some intermittent spices too.

Taste - Bread leads off with banana and cloves following up. Breadier than most and finishes sweet than most. That said the differences between Tributary and the top German examples isn't that much.

Mouthfeel - Starts creamy but seems a bit more watery than other examples. Carbonation and body are good and appropriate.

Overall - A solid hefe that is a nice Canadian example, but if I'm in a pinch, I'm going for some of the greater and even more accessible German options.

355 mL can from the LCBO; dated Feb 14 2024 and served barely chilled. A collaboration with Tailgunner Brewing out of Calgary.

Pours cloudy and effervescent, its golden yellow-hued body graced with one finger of tight, foamy white head that is in a hurry to be somewhere else. Sixty seconds later, a frothy collar and filmy cap remain in place; some snaking strands of lace can be produced with a swirl of the glass. The nose includes hints of banana chips and bready, wheaty malts, with suggestions of clove spiciness, apples and graininess.

Not bad - I'm getting rich, wheaty malt flavours of bread and grains, together with fruitier notes of banana, lemon and sweet red apple flesh. Finishes yeasty, with subtle orange peel, grassy hops and clove spiciness transitioning into a wheaty aftertaste. Medium in body, with active carbonation that prickles the palate throughout each sip; smooth and easy-drinking, but without the substantive mouthfeel of a top notch hefe. Good drinkability.

Final Grade: 3.68, a passable B grade. I wish hefeweizens were more popular with modern beer consumers - I have maintained a fondness for weissbier since my early days of beer geekdom, but it's getting harder and harder to find new ones to try. Avling's Tributary lacks the finesse and complexity of (most of) its German competition, but it's still an enjoyable rendition. I would pick this up again, especially if I'm able to find it fresh, but for now it sits comfortably in the middle of the pack, well behind my established favourites.
