Picked this up recently at Source as I never had this before and have enjoyed their other Saisons that I've been able to get my hands on. This was true to style but quite dark indeed - in hue, taste, and body as this almost felt like a Dubbel or Doppelbock.
No doubt that this was true from the get-go as this poured a molasses brown with a nice, offsetting tan head that was thick, soft, and long-lasting. Not a lot of lacing was left behind aside from the scattered splotches and a thin hint of a ring near the center of my pint glass. Tons of fig, plum, dark cherry, and rye in the nose as the taste was just as deep, nuanced, and nicely spiced. Enough booze, malt, bread, and just a touch of earthy hops combined for a beer that was soothing, softly warming, and plenty strong as I felt the booze kick in, as it never let go once it got a hold on me.
Plenty of raisin in the aftertaste and with a light carbonation, the flavors were allowed to linger seemingly forever. This was not a beer to be taken likely when it came to the heft but Munich Malt helped this to finish clean and crystalline when it came to it's sugar content. Canned on 12/14 with "BRACE YOURSELF" written below it, this wasn't as strong as that message indicated but there was so much going on here as everything melded beautifully together. Perfect for winter, this was another amazing offering in Source's lineup that ultimately won me over!
