The ESB (Extra Special Bitter) is a staple in the pub culture in England. A traditional style, the English Sporting Beer has a nice malt backbone that balances well with earthy, herbal, and slightly fruity English hops. This beer is about putting our differences from 1776 and 1812 behind us, and hoisting pints with your mates.

Malty and fruity, great take on the style. Packed with flavor. Stronger than it would be in the UK but it’s delicious

Easy going drinker that pours an unfiltered orange with some decent head that recedes to a faint wisp with some gentle lacing on the glass. Filled with flavors like Bready, and nutty, back with a slight herbaceous, citrus, and yeast.
Enjoyable, and would LOVE to try on cask.

Pours an attractive clear, orange amber with a nice off white head. There is decent retention and lacing. The aroma is more subdued than I would like, and might be the beer's weakest point. Taste features a restrained hop presence, with orange citrus notes right upfront. Mouthfeel is fine, if perhaps just a bit thin. Proper level of carbonation for the style. This is a good beer overall, staying within the bounds of the style, but I think it could use a bit more assertiveness on the nose and palate.

Undated can; drank 1/1/23 @ the Yarchives.

See-through dull orange appearance.

A rough pour yielded a HUGE khaki head (careful pouring!); strong, frothy tree-rung lace.

Oak, orange peel & faint melon notes in the nose.

Medium mouthfeel.

Oak, lemon, dry wheat & faint melon flavors.

A solid, quaffable offering.

12 oz. can, no date. My first beer from Midwest Coast Brewing Company, out of Chicago. Yet another local option that I didn't know existed. Acquired a single can as part of a mixed six pack at the local Binny's. "English Style Pale Ale".

Poured to a clear stemless wine snifter.
Pours a dark coppery burnt sienna orange. Finger of strong frothy off-white head that leaves good spotty lacing. Appears fresh & adequately carb'd.
Aroma is light, but pleasant: toasty, bready, malty, with slight hop fruitiness lingering in the back. Taste follows: dry, toasty, nutty, bready. Notes of brown bread, bread crust, slight mineral water taste & texture. Definitely a proper English style pale done right. Medium-light bodied, smooth, crisp carbonation, super easy-drinking.

Midwest Coast Brewing Company English Sporting Beer -----4/5.

Orange and brown clear body with two fingers of a tan foamy head. Orange and leafy hops atop earthy yeast and darker mild malt in both smell and taste. Feel is medium-light bodied, smooth and dry, though does thin out a bit. Please put on cask!

Nice orangeish/coppery foggy pour, monstrous soapy meringue head that just lasts forever and will probably leave a ton of lacing. First fragrance upon opening was of warm, stale beer. Thankfully that cleared up on the pour, mostly malt and faint hops. 1st impressions last. Taste was similar, mouthfeel, was smooth and almost creamy, good carbonation. I see that this is been tagged as retired, can had no date. As they say, "pooh happens".

I have to say this reminds me of an English Pale. Lots of hardwater Burton-onTrent Taste/Feel to me.
But since I claim no expertise on the matter, I'll go with the ESB classification. (Besides, I rarely make a fuss.)
ESB (the name) seems to be a play on ESB (the style.) But the joke is beyond my pay scale (I'm retired.)

ESB Looks pretty clear. Smells are pretty mute. But Tastes seem much like the real deal, also... and that may be an achievement when drawing on Lake Michigan instead of the River Trent.

This is my second from Midwest Coast. The first was in September 2019; before they had a taproom or website... so they did not qualify for a micro-review. Now that they have both and are still struggling through the Age of Covid, I gotta give them some OA Hugs... in part because they seem to brew better than their competition that also is less than two years old and, in part, because the two beers I've had are sophisticated interpretations. With so much to choose from and with me being a Belgo-phile, I may not make it to Midwest Coast again for a while. But even so, I'm impressed.
