Pured from a Foster's "oil can".

Appearance is a golden color with head that doesn't linger. The carbonation is more than the premium but fairly standard for pale lager beers.

The smell is light grassy and bland. Nothing special here.

The taste is corny and sweet with some malt characters of highly toasted grains but the corn sweetness is up front. Hop taste is minimal and has a slightly flowery taste with some sourness.

Mouthfeel is light, airy, and whispy. Not to far from most stand lasers.

Overall there is nothing special about this beer. If you buy Foster's, go buy the Premium. If you want a lager get a standard American lager instead.

From a 25.4oz can dated JUN0126 into a 20oz "pint" glass.

Pours a translucent golden yellow with about one and a half fingers of white head. Really nice retention and lacing.

Typical corn AAL aroma dominates. Light floral and wet earth.

Light sweet corn flavor with a noticeable metallic back end and aftertaste.

Low to medium bodied with high carbonation.

At least it looks good.

 

 

 

Poured from a can into a pilsner glass.


Look: Straw yellow-orange. Thick, white head. Very active carbonation. Good head retention and lacing.

Smell: Moderately malty and a touch sweet. Maybe a little hop bitterness hiding in the background.

Taste: Good malt character. Biscuit. Sweet, but not quite as sweet as the nose.

Feel: Light-medium bodied. Fine carbonation.

Overall: An ok lager, but the sweetness becomes a bit much as you stay with it. There's plenty of other similar beers on the market, so nothing really special is going on here, save for the large can and low price.

I had no expectations for this beer, but I was pleasantly surprised. 2 for smell because you can hardly smell it; which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it almost isn't there.

A: crystal clear; pale gold in color; 1 finger white head that receded to a wispy cap; no lacing;

S: sweet malt, a little spice, and a bit of lemon;

T: nicely balanced; grainy; mild bitterness at the end;

M: light bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish;

O: easy drinking; a nice representation of the style;

 

There once was a time(early 90’s) that this stuff was always near me. .25 Foster’’s draught nights, and the longnecks were always a weekend treat for the gang. We “thought” that we were drinking world-class beer..the commercials? Iconic. Time has a way of separating you from some things. I drank so much of the stuff, I can still taste it when I belch. Today, I picked up a 25oz oil can & I am reviewing an old friend. I poured that fatty can, into my 20oz PBR lager WIDEMOUTH glass. Always hated the gold color of this beer. It looks like straight motor oil. The smell, is unique. There is something akin to fruitcake going on there. Like fermented fruitcake. I like it. 1 finger frothy, head that stays. Oh. BB date of Feb 09 2026. Not as smooth as full bodied as I remember. This one, has a thinner mouthfeel, and metallic on the palette. Astringent even. But there is something about the malt character that I like. I don’t know why… but that last sip had a colt 45 feel/profile. Hmmm. It definately changed a LOT over the decades. Not crazy bad. But not what it once was. Cheers!

Had Foster's (Lager) 45 years ago, partly because of the classic, steel, 25-oz. (Was it really 750-ml.?) "oil can," and had a few more in the early '80s, but not again until Sept. 2025 poured from 25.4-oz. can, bottom stamped (presumably) best by "JAN2626," bought for $2.62 at Wal-Mart, into pilsner glass.

Pours light gold with clarity and huge, foamy, near-white head, with good retention, leaving chunky lace down the glass. Definite cedar and mild herbal aromas off pour, and continuing, then a little hop spice, with more than a hint of unfortunate funky, sweet corn, and a little orchard fruit aroma as warms. On tasting, begins with a bit of mild malt, then a little tangy orchard fruit, over a fairly full, aggressively carbonated body, with a hint of hop spice, before a long, slightly fruity, nicely drying, neutrally but rather numbingly bitter finish.

In my memory ca. 1983, this is bad beer. Maybe because I was drinking it straight out of a steel can, after being shipped around the world? In my glass in 2025, Foster's Lager isn't bad at all.

Reviewing from memory, have had this brew many times, many, many years ago, in a galaxy far far away. I remember this being considered a premium beer?

 

 

 

Really didn’t think this was bad. Nice subtle bitterness contrasts a predominance of sweet bread on a light, clean finish. Unbelievably my first time trying this.
