Had at the taproom

A - Poured a deep red color with almost no head. It was very clear throughout and you could see only a slight bit of carbonation.

S - Sour cherries, some slight wood tones, and some malt hiding in the background.

T - Much less sour than many others of the style. Sweet taste upfront with plenty of cherry flavor. A little oak helps balance the sweetness out. Still on the sweet side. More like a cherry soda than cherry wine.

M - Medium bodied with relatively low carbonation. Dances on the tongue.

D - This is extremely drinkable. Not the best of the style but a good offering and not overpowering. This is well done.

Reddish-brown with fairly good clarity. A small off-white head recedes to a film.

Perfumey, soapy aroma. Toasted malt, estery Belgian yeast, mild acetic sourness.

Taste is pretty mediocre. Mildly sour and tangy, bready malt, some grainy/husky astringency. Oddly soapy. Thin body but somewhat astringent. Not a great bruin.

A: The pour is a murky dark amber color with a mild off-white head forming.

S: The nose starts off incredibly metallic. Almost like steel or the iron rich character of vitamins. There's some mild maltiness along with a burnt coffee note and bleach.

T: To quote Steinbeck, this one's "fulla piss an' vinegar". Cardboard, stale bread, and solvents also make a guess appearance.

M: The body is medium and the carbonation is low to medium I suppose.

D: Unfortunate because I like most of the Schlafly beers I've had, but this was just bad.

Pours a clear, dark red color. 1/4 inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of hops, sweet malt, and slight tart malt. Fits the style of an Oud Bruin. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation. There is a barely noticeable sourness. Tastes of sweet malt, hops, slight cherry, and slight tart malt. Overall, too mild in every respect to be a good Oud Bruin. A decent try and easy to drink, still a good beer, but lacking in comparison to other Oud Bruins.

Six ounce pour in a lovely snifter.
Appearance: Murky mahogany, absolutely zero head.
Smell: Smells like Sweet Tarts and purple Kool Aid.
Taste: Mild sour bite. Cloves, red wine, and raspberries.
Mouthfeel: Medium body, light carbonation. Slight numbing from the clove flavor.
Overall: This is Schlafly’s second sour beer (both were called Oud Bruin). Their first one was done via an accelerated technique of adding lactic acid and cherry puree to a four week old beer. This time they aged 100 gallons of their original Oud Bruin for a year on lactobacillus in Le Bourgeois Norton barrels, and later blended it with 500 gallons of the “cheater” version. They also added some more raspberries and some blackberries. Overall it is a very nice attempt. And it was perfect for the 93F weather outside.

A: Dark maroon body with slight haziness. It has a nice off-white head that remains as a thin cap on the brew for the duration of my drink.

S: As soon as I smelled this, I knew how awful the tasting was going to be. It was the first drink of the night. Perhaps the growler wasn't rinsed out properly, or perhaps the beer itself is just bad, but it smelled like chlorine / cleaning product, with some aromas of toast and yeast.

T: Ugh... Cleaning product, soap, salt. Something definitely went wrong in QC.

M: Thin body with a harsh finish... Again, cleaning product is surely to blame.

D: I drainpoured it and resigned myself to a night of misery. t0rin0, womencantsail, and largadeer are like the Three Wise Men of bad tastings, bearing gifts of chlorine, diacetyl, and mirth. What a way to start the evening.

Poured a brownish/reddish copper at the Schlafly Tap Room into an imperial pint. Smelled of caramel malts, dark fruits, and a bit of sourness. The taste was very similar to the nose - lots of sugary / caramelly malt that is balanced by some darker fruits and some dry sourness. The mouthfeel is nice and full with good carbonation and finishes very dry. Overall, this is a really good beer...I wish I could get this in a bottle.

Poured into a snifter from the tap at the Taproom in Midtown.

Pours a nice deep ruby/mahogany color that lets very little light through. Quite hay and with a delicious light ecru dense head that is thin and recedes quickly.

Aroma is a bit mild. Sine woody funk is present. Nice slight barnyard aroma of old/ wet wood. There is a nice slight tartness in the nose. Mild fruit and def some balsamic vibegar tartness.

Taste starts off sharp and refreshing. Crisp vinegary tartness that is present but not intense at all. Comes up quick and lets itself known but slowly gets balanced and reduced by some slight dark fruit notes a definitely some woody funk. There is some nice balancing bready malt notes that give the beer a nice finish. Mouthfeel is light yet very yummy. Some slight lemon notes are also present in the tartness along with other berry-like fruits. As the brew warms it becomes slightly more phenolic.

Overall, Schalfly has been doing ok with their sours. Very light.

Different beer than what was previously released. On tap @ the Schlafly tap room.

The beer pours a hazy, dull raspberry died rust color with no head or visible sediment. The nose is quite fruity with hints of tart cherries and questionable oak/vanilla. The taste is mild with similar tart cherry forward, a touch of oak and funk, but subtle. The mouthfeel is relatively medium bodied, drinkable, slightly tart, hardly sour, and has mild depth from, once again, questionable oak. It's mildly carbonated and quite drinkable. I'd order another glass for $5/glass and good drinkability.
