Pours a pretty clear amber-red color, with a pretty good head and lacing that eventually subsides.

Smell is delightful! Sweet and very malty, with plenty of rye, bready notes, and caramel.

Taste is almost like a really low alcohol barleywine meets a rye beer, then they blend it all together to meet the bock style. It's wonderfully done, perhaps the best of it's style that I've ever had. Sweet caramel malts and wonderful rye flavors dominate, with plenty of bread and a nice helping of honey and light brown sugar and a touch of spices.

Feel is wonderful too. Very easy to drink, yet it feels so rich and full in your mouth. A sweet rye aftertaste finishes it off beautifully. Feels slightly slick going down.

Excellent beer. Schlafly remains my favorite brewery simply because of the large variety of beers they make, the innovative new beers they come up with, and the consistently high quality. Highly recommended.

EDIT 08Nov2011 - Having my second 750mL bottle of this and it's just as good the second time around. Smooth and sweet, great malts all around, perfect body, this is an awesome beer and I'm leaving my ratings as-is. Get some before it's gone!

Pours a caramelly brown color with a nice, creamy head. Smells fruity with dark fruit aromas. There is also a bit caramelly malts too. Taste is pretty similar - starts off really caramelly that move to darker fruit flavors. A bit of rye spiciness is in the mix too. Ends with a nice fruitiness. Creamy, smooth body that goes down well. Overall, one of the better beers I have had from Schlafly. Recommended if you are at whole foods.

Pours a reddish-mahogany with a 3-finger white head that reduces quickly but leaves a ring for quite a while. Spotty lace.

The nose is very grainy, like the raw barley they pour in your hands on the tour, with also a very husky edge- like sunflower seeds- and vague aromas of toffee, raisiny fruit, fig and dried cherry.

Medium bodied palate has an expansive breadiness and earthy hop bitterness; rye adds a robust dryness, forcing the malt to take on flavors of crisp bread crust, with touches of caramel and dark chocolate. The middle goes back to that huskiness, while the finish is grainy and toasty dry.

A damn good brew. Crisp as a Bock should be but very deliciously malty on many levels, with the rye adding extra dimensions. A great food-beer too.

750 mL bottle poured into a tulip (first pour) and pint glass (second pour).

Bottled with love on 9.13.11. Opened 1.18.12.

Pours dark cherry-mahogany, clear but letting very little light through. Small, dissipating light tan head leaves a faint film.

Nose is nice, subtle but with complexities. Aromas of caramel and toffee, lightly toasted bread, a bit of spicy grain, dried fruit (raisins, sultanas, figs?), and bready yeast. Sweet but mild.

Hits the same notes on the palate, but a bit more strongly overall. A good bit earthier (hoppier?) than the nose suggests, dried leaves specifically. Rich and somehow cloying but balanced.

Medium bodied, somewhat firm, finishes off-dry. Better and more drinkable when poured into a pint glass, at least for my tastes.

Bought a 1 Pt. 9.4 Fl Oz. bottle of this from Whole Foods Market in Brentwood, MO for $8.99. Poured from the bottle w/ SCHLAFLY RYE BOCK in Orange/Gold/White Writing (& A Schlafly Lager for Whole Foods Market in White) into my 0,47l New Belgium Oversized Snifter Glass. Has Bottled with Love on 9 13 11 on the bottom of the bottle.

Aroma- A strong boozy aroma from the beginning. After drowning my nose mid glass (got made of by this action), wiped off my nose, and found some richness, ton of malt, and a pleasant fruit ester or two. Rye was very mild in here.

Appearance- Pours a 3 finger head that has semi-weak retention. Has a copper body with good clarity. Leaves good lacing behind just like the appearance.

Flavor- Tons of complexed tastes all throughout. Starts with a rich caramel beginning and then has a slight rye taste following. Has very strong hops that come through at the finish! Medium hop bitterness and then rye follows after looking at the label again to reassure my doubts of finding this.

Mouthfeel- Medium Bodied, Light Carbonation, Smooth, and then teases you with light flavors... Can't make out much from it.

Overall Impression- A very nice Bock that had interesting flavors. A ton of caramel and hop is involved and dig it! I will definitely be going for this one on-tap (due to my NEVER drink the same beer twice problem lately!). I suggest you get a bottle if ever @ Whole Foods!

Presentation: Huge thanks to Kris M. for picking this up for me while he was in STL. 750ml painted bottle; Schlafly's painted bottle designs are generally kind of hit or miss, but this is classy, elegant, and sharp looking. Bottled 9-13-11.

Appearance: Poured into my Black Sheep half-pint snifter, this pours a bright sienna hue and is capped by a large dark ivory cap which shows some nice stick and lacing.

Smell: I dunno what I was expecting, but it wasn't quite this. This is incredibly nutty, with some toasted/bready malt undertones. This is really much more like a big, sweet, hazelnut-infused brown ale. A bit too sweet/hazelnutty for what this is going for.

Taste: In the taste department, this mirrors the aromas; it's quite hazelnutty, slightly fruity, and malty. It reminds me a little bit of Rogue's Hazelnut Brown Ale. A nice kick of spicy rye on the finish. Not bad at all, just...not at all what I was expecting from a rye bock, and from the reviews I'd read.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and smooth

Conclusion: Was really looking forward to this one, as Schlafly is one of my go-to breweries. Still, as a bock this falls a bit short.

750ml bottle poured into snifter.

Appearance: Pours a pretty clear, deep amber color with about one finger of head that fades within a minute or so. It has some really good looking legs to it as well. Looks spot on for a Bock.

Smell: Malt-centric and slightly sweet. I catch some pheonols in this one as well. Caramel, rye, and big breads. Can't wait!

Taste: Very close to a malt bomb, but holds enough restraint that it offers some masterful balance. Big malts, big breads, rye, caramel, wrapped up with a certain sweetness (brown sugar?) that is undeniably appealing. A pretty complex brew. This somewhat reminds me of a cleaner Scotch Ale or like where a Barleywine meets a big rye beer. I can detect some light noble hopping as well.

Mouth: Very smooth. Its slightly boozy, but I think that's what its going for. Definitely a full body on this one, but it is so well balanced that the booze adds an edge to overall feel of the brew that makes the brew bigger.

Overall: One of the best Schlafly brews I've had to date. So well balanced, and its one of the maltier German-style lagers I've had. Yet the drinkability on this one is strong. I could sip on a couple 750s of these for hours and hours.

I will probably buy this one any time that I find it from now on. I would suggest that you try it sometime soon. It's worth trading for and you will only be able to get it for a little while longer. I'm also going to get another and age it at cellar temps.

Schlafly Whole Foods Rye Bock

Brewed for the 10th Anniversary of the Brentwood Whole Foods in St. Louis.

Poured into a mug from a 750ml bottle.

A – Pours a nice dark amber color with some mild brown notes and some reddish hues. There is a nice head on the beer that is about 1 inch tall with a nice ecru color to it. It is of medium density. (4.0)

S – Strong spicy rye notes fill the nose. This is followed by some nice hearty bread notes and some sweetness. There is some nice caramel notes as well as some slight molasses. Aroma is good but a bit bland. (3.5)

T & M – Wow. Very good tasting beer. There are nice notes of sweet grainy malt and some molasses and slight roasted notes. There are also some nice bread notes and some delicious spicy rye. The beer is a very good fall beer. There are some nice fresh grain notes as well as some slight cinnamon spice to it as well. Very easy to drink brew. The mouthfeel is nice and light and has some good carbonation but some slight stickiness on the back end. The ABV is well hidden. (4.5)(4.0)

O – Good brew. I love how Schlafly does these things with some of the local businesses. Very good brew. (4.0)
