473 mL can from the brewery; dated Jun 15 2023 and served slightly chilled. Described as a "golden lager", with 25 cents from each can going to Project Mental Wellness.
Pours a bright, clear golden-yellow colour, topped with one finger of smooth, foamy white head that dissipates within a couple of minutes. A tight, creamy looking collar is the most notable remnant, as there's minimal lace production and only a few wisps of film on the surface. Fairly neutral aroma of grainy malts and cereal, specifically Rice Krispies.
It's a decent craft lager - bready malts, digestive biscuit and a light honeyed sweetness come through first, backed by graininess throughout the sip. Very little in the way of discernible hop presence - maybe a touch of earthiness at the finish, but biscuits and grains remain dominant through the finish, then briefly into the aftertaste, which fades a few moments later. Light in body, with low carbonation, at least for a lager; feels smooth and soft, with great drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.6, a serviceable B grade. Things We Should Say is your basic, bare bones American pale lager - ok, ok, it's for a good cause, so maybe it's not *completely* prototypical. Its malt-forward flavour profile is a little on the sweet side, and there's hardly any hops to act as a counterweight - both of which I can deal with, but overall this lager just leaves me wanting. I've had plenty of worse craft lagers, but I'd say this one is a little above average at best.
