Düsseldorf Style Sticke Alt

100% whole leaf Tettnang hops were added to the decoction boil, with no other hot side hops added. Our house German Ale yeast ferments clean, and accentuates the mild stone fruit notes from the German Dark Munich malts. In a non-traditional twist, a small addition of Tettnang was also added as a dry hop during cold maturation.

Pours a dark brown, fairly cloudy. Not too much aroma, a little breadiness. Solid taste, good amount of malt and sweetness, fruity (but mildly, not like a NEIPA) with some mild bitterness. Fairly light body, easy drinking and pleasant.

(16 oz can, canned on: 09/09/2021; purchased cold single at the brewery... poured into my Tonewood tulip lager glass)

L: mildly cloudy, garnet-colored liquid; garnet-tinged, off-white, loose foam... head doesn't hold... curious about the small 'heirloom rustic ales' stamp down in the left corner - an excuse for subpar quality? I should investigate; abv not given...

S: an egregiously over-zealous, yet undeniably inviting woodsy, earthy hop-forward scent with a big, caramelly brown bread malt aroma right behind it; accent of herbal-spice and/or black pepper... high marks for intensity, but the angles seem jagged and frayed

T: there seems to be fermentation scars on this - I could be wrong... toasty near burnt with the underlying malt nectar providing a nice contrast... faint caramelly roasted nut thread; vaguely vinous... mild bitterness in the form of that leafy, bitter yeast 'rusticity' pervading... perhaps the peppery top note is derived from a melding of the plant and toasted elements...

F: appropriately light-medium bodied and silken... shapeless flow, relatively vanishing finish, mellow warm friction... not too weighty to preclude another round

O: yeah, it's an Alt, but a lazy one; good enough for a poke... ok, I've heard of Heirloom, duh... its potential is apparent though; a craving could develop... tighten this up boys! I'll be back for more (1830)
