Close to Brewmaster Dan Carey’s heart, this Doppelbock’s journey began with Dan’s re-discovery of whole cone Diamant hops grown at his urging in Hallertau, Germany. Over ten years of his personal heritage barley research resulted in Dan choosing this seed propagation of Czech barley kilned as Pilsner Malt here is Wisconsin. He reveled in the challenge of double decoction brewing in his rescued 1962 copper Brewhouse, rehomed to New Glarus in 1997. This strong Bock lagered 10 weeks in the cellar before resting in the bottle 6 months for mature flavor perfection. Every journey begins with a single step.

A - Dark brown body, with red highlights, mostly opaque, light tan head, and no lacing to speak of.

S - A bright dark fruit punch, plums mostly, with caramel and dark bread notes.

T - Follows the nose, with dark fruit and bread and caramel mingling with tea notes, floral highlights, and a subtle dry overlay in the close.

M - Moderate weight, decent carbonation, and a clean finish.

O - A lovely brew, sweet and satisfying, with a bright clean drinkability that is atypical in my experience.

Surprisingly refreshing and lighter than expected for the style. Brown, bordering on dark, big fluffy tan head. Expected scents of toffee, dark fruit, and malt. Taste follows, but with a spritely lemony aftertaste. Slightly thick and syrupy medium bodied, booze is present. I don’t know if it was drinking it cold, but this is a milder, zestier version of a dopplebock, almost a stronger summer ale for a day on a Wisconsin shore. Damn good.

At a group tasting this was the favorite. Shimmering somewhat clear brown body, tan head with spotted lacing. Dark fruit explosion in the nose, especially raisin, black currant and fig, with brown doppel yeast and dark malt backing. Taste adds some toast, toasted caramel to malts, with well balanced yeast ending softly. Drinkable and full, malt led but kept in check by the yeast and general earthy textures. The wife loved it

Pours a clear mahogany brown with a sudsy tan head that lingers a bit. This looks like the very definition of a doppelbock in my glass.

The nose features toffee, wheat bread, and lots of stone fruit - literally loads of stone fruit. I really like where this is heading.

The toffee and wheat bread are prominent on the taste, at the back of the palate after the stone fruit flavors, specifically fig and dark cherry flavors, shine through.

The mouthfeel is full and edges toward creamy, perfect for this beer. New Glarus is at the tippity top of the beer nerd pyramid, IMHO.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a New Glarus 30th anniversary mug. Pours a chestnut brown with three fingers of khaki colored foam head. Dark bread with light earthy hops, light dark fruits and some lively lager yeast. I cracked this bottle after letting it sit out for a bit and it is at a great temperature. Not room temp but nearing and the flavors pop. The taste follows the nose up front with dark bready malts and light figs and prunes but there are also hints of chocolate and caramel in there as well. It’s a malty beast of a lager but still maintains drinkability. Thick, syrupy mouthfeel with a subtle carbonation. Rich and intense but really good. Had been wanting to try this one and was fortunate enough to have a buddy bring one back from a work trip up north.

Pours a gorgeous bright red-brown bronze color on top of which sits a thin coffee colored head less than one finger high. Aroma is moderate roasted malt with a faint hint of dark fruit. Taste is wonderful, with a dunkel profile. I am reminded of fresh bread and roasted grain. This brews leaves you with a wonderful, warm feeling and is a must try.

12oz bottle. Stamp on bottle neck appears to be '0 0 5 5 11:04'.
Body looks to be clear, with a ruby brown color. Off white head becomes an island and a ring. No lasting lacing because the foam spots slide back down into the body.
Aroma of roasted grain malts, caramel, green apple, prune, and date.
Taste is sweet brown bread, caramel, date, raisin, and later on some spicy hops. Sweet bread and date/raisin continue on in the aftertaste.
Medium mouthfeel. Very smooth and silky. More spicy than bitter. Good carbonation.
Long lasting sweet brown bread flavor.

I'm so happy Gyrator is back after being absent for a few years. I miss you! Part of a six-pack, on to the beer:

A short head forms and slowly dissipates above this ruby brown and red; it looks like autumn in the body. More head would add to the look. Good things happens when I smell this beer: I'm getting notes of sweet bread, light grassy hops, something else this is sweet but not too sweet.

Everything hums along nicely and then Gyrator beings to rock. This doppelbock is silky smooth with a gentle snap of carbonation, and a taste you want to put in your mouth. It tastes like a dessert bread, or maybe a raisin bread which has been glazed with a gentle icing. Then the light spicy note of hops come along and dries things out.

There aren't many other doppelbocks which could compete with Gyrator. The other 49 states are missing a treat this winter, but I suppose they could ice skate their way to Wisconsin for a case.

Appearance: A quick bubble show releases a two finger ecru head over the tawny colored liquid; decent retention with a few strands of lacing

Smell: Brown bread, caramel, spice cake tones and dates

Taste: Brown bread and caramel forward, with spice cake and date flavors building; the sweetness is apparent, but not overwhelming in the finish as an earthy hop aspect keeps it is check

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: This is an excellent American doppelbock, the style that first got me interested in craft beer
