So I picked this one up by accident and it's been sitting in my fridge for a while. I know this was picked up in error as a bought one of these for a friend, but there was a mix up and I ended up with two of these. Thankfully, this appears to be a New England IPA, so this might be something I will enjoy.
Appearance: Poured with two fingers of head that left some minor lace and stuck around well enough, but nothing to write home about. The body is a hazy orange with ample small particulate floating in the body.
Smell: Citrus hops, specifically a lot of orange with a hint a lemon and grapefruit and herbs. This smells more orange then orange juice if that's possible, and the potency is there and only improve with warming. That said, this is a one and a half trick pony in terms of complexity.
Taste: Juicy, as orange without an acid note and a touch of bready malt reminiscent of orange loaf starts us off, and then in turns to more citrus and hints of grapefruit and lemon assert themselves. From there citrus hops take over as the bitterness shows up, but is thankfully hamstrung. That said, it's predominantly orange citrus with some mild bread and hop notes that are just a bit too dry in the aftertaste. It comes across as very basic to me, almost like a hoppy, acid reduced screwdriver.
Mouthfeel: The carbonation is great for a nice frothy experience, and the citrus being neither too bitter nor too acidic is nice. The downside here, the transitioning is so short, that it's blatantly noticeable. There isn't much of a journey to be had with this one, but that's more an issue with taste the mouthfeel.
Drinkability: On the lighter side of medium body, which given it's gimmick isn't a bad thing. The dry note however does make the beer a lot less refreshing then it could be. That said, it settles down very well, and despite the fact that I know this is hop heavy. Easy enough to drink I supposed.
Final Thoughts: I think I might be a bit generous with this review. I mean, after I wrote the words down, that screwdriver comment sort of hit me, and I'm not a fan when a beer ends up as a poorly executed cocktail. That said, that doesn't appear to have been the intent here, and in this case the bread and dry note does bring something there that would separate it from a screwdriver. That being no acidic presence and a dry herbal note. That said, for the most part I enjoyed this offering. I just wish there was some additional complexity to it.
