Appearance: Pours black as night with two fingers worth of head that had average retention but produces no lace.
Smell: A bare whiff of dry, dark malt, even after a lot of warming the potency barely even moved an inch. Nothing bad, it's just there is no potency or even a unique spin on this one.
Taste: Burnt malt with a dry note to that builds and builds to a bitter smoke and mild hop end. This is a sipping stout and a decent one, but it's not especially complex. It probably could benefit from Nitro
Mouthfeel: The carbonation here is a bit too aggressive. It doesn't offer a creaminess to it the brew but aggressively pushes the burnt malt note. Transitioning is pretty much a incline to a bitter end. Aftertaste is smoke and burnt malt. It's a sipper.
Drinkability: Heavy although I've had heavier stouts, it's still where it should be. The dry note of the beer restrains it more then encouraging drinking as to quench. That said, it seems very clear to me this is intended to be a sipping stout to be nursed.
Final Thoughts: If you are looking for a local alternative to Guinness, I guess this is ok, and it would probably benefit from nitrogen. It's decently done, but there's nothing that's unique or standing out with the beer.
