Zoigl beers date back to the Middle Ages in Germany when villages would invest in communal brewing equipment to share in the town’s beer production. The brewing duties would rotate amongst the villagers, and when the beer was ready to be consumed, the host would hang the “Zoigl” (or brewers star) above their door to signify to the villagers that the beer is ready to be consumed. The host would convert their house into a temporary bar that was open to the townspeople to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
Ours is an American interpretation of this timeless tradition. Corn grits cereal mash, American barley, American hops, cold fermented and horizontally lagered. We collaborated with our friends @liveoakbrewing and @yakimachief who set us up with some Cluster and whole cone Mt Hood hops; two classic American hop varietals. This 4.4% abv American Zoigl lager has a pleasant cereal maltiness, balanced with classic piney and grapefruit hop character sans
This expression of American ingredients is a strong argument for reimagining what an American lager can be. We can’t wait to share this beer with you!

Had American Zoigl poured from pint can, bottom stamped "CANNED ON 7/31/23," into pilsner glass.
Pours bright gold with clarity and huge, foamy near-white head, with excellent retention, leaving chunks of splotchy lace down the glass. Aromas of sweet corn with a little herbal bitterness off pour, then of sharp, unripe stone fruit. On tasting, begins smooth, creamy, with and mildly APA-like fruit, before a big, herbal crispness arrives, and carries into a clean, slightly fruity, but still creamy finish.
No idea what a Zoigl should taste like, American or otherwise, but this is a smooth, surprisingly fruity and interestingly herbal, crisp lager.

I had this on draft 9/5/23 @ the Hopleaf.
Semi-opaque dull orange/yellow appearance.
Small khaki head; nice lacing remained.
Sweet corn & cereal grain notes in the nose.
Medium mouthfeel.
Sweet corn, cereal grain & dry yeast flavors.
Raw & rugged; not my favorite but it's quite drinkable.

tallboy can poured into Goldfinger Dimpled Mug.
Canned on date is 7/31/23.
Appearance: Pale Golden yellow bodied lager with massive bone with head. Head has great staying power. Speckled lacing remains behind as a drink this lager.
Smell: Cornbread on the nose with a hint of toasted grain. Hops are a little more pronounced in the aroma than in flavor profile of this lager.
Taste: Decent sweetness that is predominantly freshly bread with a hint of corn and toasted cereal grains. A small & balancing hop burst appears in the finish that has very minimal bitterness to it; perhaps a light herbal grass note with a hint of citrus & pine. I am not able to tell that it is in fact grapefruit as the beer description mentions. Either way the balance of hop and malt here is how I really enjoy my lagers to be...the hops add complexity without adding bitterness and hiding that wonderful malt profile that Goldfinger seems to have a knack for doing so very well.
Mouthfeel: Light bodied lager. moderate carbonation. Infinitely crushable. Soft and delicate body. Just enough crisp as well.
Overall: Well the Goldfinger Lagerversary did not disappoint. I thought that the smoked Helles was the only beer that was going to be canned, but to my fortune and excitement Zoigl was also canned. Glad to finally try this beer. It's worthy of the Goldfinger praise.
