2023 vintage; consumed on 10/30/2024

Pours a viscous, silky, midnight-black body capped with a short-lived half-finger of pale mocha foam, swiftly yielding a blank surface, slim yet creamy collar, and minimal-no lacing holding to the walls of the glass.

Aromas of airy marshmallow phase into gooey nougat decadence cut cleverly by dusty barrel undertones as a molten dark chocolate wave crashes over a modest roast profile.

Taste brings silky vanilla enmeshed in prickly barrel tannins, with accents of toasted graham cracker building into a medley of melted caramel and dark cocoa through the mid-palate and a soft roast reducing to suggestions of prune and black raspberry creme on the finish.

Mouthfeel offers a medium-full body and minimal carbonation, with densely silky textures veering into creamy tendencies as gently tannic underpinnings settle over the back end and char lingers on the swallow.

Transitionally brilliant blending from Private Press yielding an all-encompassing interplay of malty nuance and distinct barrel intonation.

Thanks, Chris, Cassidy

What a spectacular nose. Less roasty than I was expecting, this leans toward to slightly savory, umami rich realm of stouts with licorice and bitter dark chocolate, paired with a spectacular barrel character. Bourbon, rye-like notes ( the blend reminded me of Willetized). The vanilla is prominent, strong but not pastry like, instead expressing the full complexity that it can have. Floral, sweet, mildly woodsy. Lovely. This complexity is present on the palate as well. Excellent, rich, full mouthfeel, creamy, smooth, delicate on the palate. Layers of chocolate, barrel, vanilla, buckwheat honey, dark caramel, anise and licorice with a spicy barrel expression. Excellent.

A: Shortened neck off the transfer, due to the potent nature on stability. The decant paints this brevity to a dessert sand with a cocoa brown corridor, while the body shades a resemblance to an American Oil Beetle. Secondly, a transfer that’s agitated over the flow rate, which lightly knocks CO₂, and attunes the collar to a secreted – wood brown – centimeter. Howbeit, the initial relocations are not meant to eradicate the spindrifts, but to provide a primary glance, while the decanter unravels. In the interval, a rich black frame begins to tone raven dyes, before webbing black baccara roses. There is some retention to the above desert isles, which can be forced to cling at a fee. Upon revisiting the unravelment, there is a viscousness to the cautious discharge(s), as fluid mechanics accommodate the cathedral arch droplets

S: Phenolic aldehydes provide a soft assist through lignin degradations, when weathering the additive waves. Albeit, the start is a platform to accentuate the conditioning, as applied to the blend on Ugandan, Tahitian, and Ecuadorian beans. A composition that sequentially links Uganda to raisins, while neighboring Mitica ChocoHigos, before Tahitian & Ecuadorian surcharge on Twin Bings. The cycle entertains coffee through a licorice caviar, which stays to a shadow under the vanilla bark services, as the malt workings midriff. Coupled with, a cask awareness that constituents the sugars, for elevating the perceptions, by way of maltol(s). Thus, a warming center around a rich thickness, when penciling-in Kouign-Amann, as fudge oozes above plums + apricots. There is forested backbone to the arrangement, which triggers the wooded leather morals, besides the birch juice grants. The barrel character works to a more productive position across time, as the diaphragm is stressed over the open airs, for slinging the port & rum vats. In the same degree, hydrolysable substances conduct to canvas on windswept facilities, beyond the oak cube designs

T: A robust grain bill above an underscored barrel module, which benefits due to the calm hop responses. The gustation has a roasted element around an Alpenliebe Espresso notation, as the saccharifications promote Ryfors Creams, beneath the naturally rich – vanilla bean – staples. Moreover, temperature is taken into account, and applied early on through natural sunlight. The effect is a consideration above the oxidizing effects, which milks the course in the leading measures, to further those chocolate & vanilla caramel belongings. In back, a mocha reference point that can be attributed to the Uganda additions, while the casks work alongside the malt profile to depict Nabisco Pinwheels. There is a hop effect that maintains a sturdy muteness against the velvety fronts, which address a ruralness near clean – wormhole free – lumber. This aspect lingers on the self-restrained casks, which demands a 3rd hour to hammer out (complex) hemicelluloses. From there, a constant augmentation to the add-ons across the aerated raids, as the barrels play to connect a furfural clause. This offers a filbert report with a smoked meatiness on burnt leather, when pitting the time to the > 4.5 hr. Correspondingly, an oak tannin acknowledgment to the wooded lactone fosters, which dehydrates coconut, by a long clay (stemmed) pipe

M: Incites a sharp to smooth pathway across a warming neatness to the velvety conditions, as a soft bite constrains (& deters) the sights most affluent on cloyingness. This aspect on the bite gets enhanced over the intervals, where drying denotes a tannin discernment, for a clean attenuation. A feel that comes with a calm tepidity, which never burns in the efforts, while the ebullitions take a backstage poise

O: Calculated additions that provide a pure representation, for the designated bean, while the initial casks presence rest below. Bearing that in mind, there’s a roasted aspect to the grains, which lingers in the headway, as temperature is permitted with an aldehyde growth. All the while, a hop influence that adds an earthy pillar, while esters maintain a camouflaged concealment. An approach that portrays the supplements to blend insistently, but is allotted to air out skillfully, as the polyphenol compounds bolster

This one pours a very dark black color, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.

This smells like high quality vanilla paste, chocolate covered caramels, spicy oak, espresso bark, dark chocolate, and bourbon.

This is absolutely one of the best vanilla stouts that I’ve ever had – the balance of decadent, sweet, but still earthy vanilla flavor against a spicy and dense barrel backdrop is just masterfully done. There’s tons of barrel here – spicy, caramelly, and adding a little bit of sweet spice that plays into the vanilla well. This is maybe the most pastry flavor that Private Press has thrown into a beer yet, but I’d barely consider it a pastry stout. It just feels about as elegant as a vanilla barrel aged stout is ever going to get.

This is medium bodied, silky, velvety, and thick enough, with basically no booziness.

This is perhaps the best stout that I’ve had yet from Private Press – it’s essentially a masterpiece.

8 ball black with almost no head, though a swirl stains the glass with an oily residue.

All the vanilla, this is brownie batter and frosting to the nth degree. The barrel is also a little overwhelmed, which is surprising based on the double treatment.
