Belgian beers hold a very special place in our hearts, and were fundamental to our early motivation into exploring and brewing beer. We continue to marvel at the complexity of Belgian Trappist beer, and take a great deal of inspiration from them as yeast and fermentation driven brewers focused on bottle conditioned products. For us, there's almost nothing better than an Orval. I'll save you the longform TED Talk on the Trappist monks who brew the beer and what monastic life in their Abbey looks like, and just say Orval is a real treasure and pleasure to drink. This beer, Oaxen, is our love letter to Orval.
Similar to Orval, this is an "Abbey Style Pale"- with virtually no tie to modern "pale ale" as we know it. The structure is far more English in its base. Brewed with aged hops and fermented in neutral oak, the fermentation profile of this beer is almost entirely driven by Brettanomyces Bruxellensis, famous for its fruity, funky characteristics of cherry pie, leather and barnyard, pastoral style funk.
AROMA: dried fruit leather, grass, basement
FLAVOR: apricot galette, leather bag, dried cherry, funky earth

2024: bottle aged 1 year.
Tart, moderate acidity. Dried pineapple, light Brett funk. Brilliant clarity, straw gold, ample foam and spotty lace. Lasting surface coverage. Wet hay, quince, and honey aromas. Overall very nice, it’s complex and ages well.

375ml bottle poured into the Supermoon "ghost" logo Rastal stemmed glassware that was acquired recently at my first venture to Supermoon!
Appearance: Orangish Gold bodied beer with a bone white head.
Smell: The fruity esters and a tart citrus note seem to really blast out of the glass.
Taste: This beer is absolutely loaded with fruity esters and big fruity yeast notes. Dry as a bone...earthy oaked notes. Funky as all get out; Cob webs & very earthy. Complex, nuanced layers, and quite interesting for sure!
Mouthfeel: Light bodied beer with high carbonation levels. Fairly dry beer no doubt.
Overall: Exactly as described! This is Orval done Supermoon style! Excellent example of a Brett forward Belgian Pale Ale that was brewed stateside! No surprise this is coming straight out of Milwaukee! Wisconsin is definitely a place that I could see a beer like this being produced!

Another of Supermoon contending for an overall favourite. Solid funk and fruit flavours that had a strong, deep earthy finish with some solid tartness and light wood.
