Traditional Czech dark lager inspired by a classic from a historic brewpub in Prague. A rich and complex dark lager that starts off like a Porter but finishes crisp and dry. Refreshing jet-black lager brewed with Bohemian 2-row floor malted barley and Zuper Saaz hops

Lighter in appearance than I often see, dark red but rubier around the edges, all under a tall, puffy souffle tan head.

Pleasant malts lend cocoa, mild wood and tobacco without any smoke, exhaling a little crunchy fall leaves with a light chestnut and plum skin tang.

Pours a dark mahogany brown color that looks like a dark iced teawith a fluffy light tan head that coats the glass either splotchy lacing. Gorgeous Czech Dark Lager.

The nose is left by roasty malt and cocoa aromas, and there’s a bit of earthy hops and some grass, and a nice dark wheat bread note. Wow.

The taste is heavily front loaded with the malty flavors, especially the dark wheat bread and roasty malt. The star for me, though, is the earthy, grassy hop flavors and bit of pine (surprise!) that provide a nice bitterness at the back of the palate.

The mouthfeel is very crisp and dry, perfect for this world class lager.

16oz can, dated 12.13.23, poured into a 16oz tumbler glass. Enjoyed on 12.23.2023, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours a dark cola brown color, nearly black with nice opacity and a big fluffy khaki head that offers good retention and excellent lacing. The aroma is great, roasted dark grain, toasted bread crust, tobacco and leather, light chocolate with earthy and bitter hop. The flavors are good, big brown bread, dark grains, leather, very earthy, tobacco, grass clippings, light piney hop. The mouthfeel is good, coating, thick, fluffy medium body with a creamy and smooth finish.

Verdict: A really great CDL from Art History. Super smooth, robust flavor profile, earthy, well balanced and sessionable.

Bought from Beermiscuous.
Looks a lively lager in my BA Respect Beer glass. Smells are mostly dark malts posing as cocoa and chocolate, then some baking spices. Tastes are very well-balanced by discreet hops which help the malt to a dry finish. Medium-mouthed.

The dryness actually paired well with a sweetish BBQ sauce; both playing off the complex BBQ and drying it out a bit.
Another pretty good lager in another pretty Art History can.

Dark with a nice tan head. Aroma is roast and chocolate. Taste is light roast with a good deal of chocolate and a bit of cola. The body is light. Crazy good. Crazy drinkable.

Thanks to Robert for this one, canned 2023/12/13
Pours a foamy frothy 1.5 finger tan head with moderate retention, a little lacing, dark mahogany brownish color

Nose nice toasted brownish malts, biscuity with a bit of caramel toffee like but not sweet like, lots of bread crust, hint of baking spices, hint of a soft lager like

Taste is right on point, soft lager with fair toasted biscuity malts, bread crust, a touch of chocolate pastry like, no real roast, then some herbal spicy hops with med bitterness, some grainy cereal notes but very light, dry soft finish with med spicy hop bitterness lingering

Mouth is med to a bit lighter bod, med prickly carb

Overall pretty nice, nose was a bit on the muted side, but taste was there and overall enjoyable

Poured at 56°. Creamy khaki head; excellent cap retention; heavy ring; some soapy lace on agitation; black body with ruby see-through clarity. Baked brown bread/malt nose. Dark chocolate malt and brown bread; no bitterness. Light body, moderate minus carbonation. Easy drinking; I would gladly drink again.

Appears black on the pour but holding bright light revels darkest of browns and some nice clarity on the edges; light brown head, initially very attractive but quickly recedes to not much but a ring and some islands of film.

Nose has a decent dose of roast, pick up some earthiness in the form a dried leaves, some lightly burnt lighter bread, watered down cocoa.

Taste starts out just with a really nice malt presence but it doesn’t present itself as dark at first; it then slowly evolves from lightly unsweetened chocolate to watered down earthy coffee, some of those burnt notes you get from some dark roasts…the aftertaste is pleasantly more chocolate like with some of that lingering roast.

Great feel on this beer, it’s light but full and has a creaminess to it, medium carbonation with some burnt bitterness on the finish, no sweetness to speak of; clean and dry finish.
