Appearance: Poured with a thumb's worth of head that did not lace or retain very well. The body is a golden lager color with slow, low and steady carbonation.
Smell: Grass and grain with a touch of spice. The rye here comes out more like extremely mild Canadian whiskey, rather then a more rye bread kind of smell I normally get from Rye beer. Needs a little bit of warming to come out.
Taste: Very grainy to start then turns to a bit of rye spice before some grassy hops finish the job. There's not a lot to this offering. I mean it's done well, but it drinks like a lager with a twist to it.
Mouthfeel: It has a bit of a dryness to it in the aftertaste, which is a mix of rye and hops. The carbonation is a little low, but tends to be fairly even across the entire beer. Transitioning isn't a giant journey but is decent.
Drinkability: Closer to the light side between light and medium body. It has a lager like refreshing quality to it which is enjoyable and far more sedate then most rye beer's I've had, which I seem to prefer. It certainly settles down well enough.
Final Thoughts: The drinks like exceptionally quirky lager, which I like to a degree. That said, this isn't typical for the style in my experience, so it's not quite as I was expecting and that may have had an effect on the review. Simply and well done, but I think this would fare far better near the start or end of summer.
