(16 oz can, "Smoked Helles style lager", canned on 11/21/22; purchased cold 4 pack at the brewery this past Saturday... poured into my Human Robot tubinger mug)
L: crystal-clear, amber liquid... foam fizzled out quick; not even a collar remained
S: heavy with beechwood smoke; bold doughy bread undertone... hints of underripe banana peel... several sips in, and the backs of my nostrils contain a lingering embery scent... subtle hint of ammonia?
T: smoke-forward (for sure), doughy-bready malt bomblet... aftertaste of woody smoke, earthy hop, and toasty bread crust... the boldness of expression and contrast between the smoky top notes and grainy-malty floor are quite nice, but I'm wondering if the darker color is influencing my perception of this tasting a bit more caramel-corny than a Helles, dare I say almost malt liquor-like (Steel Reserve??)
F: between its bloated silky roundness and phenolic-ally fragrant, nimble and numbing levity, its flow was arresting yet relatively feather-light... dry with little if any residual viscosity
O: this was my second can out of the pack, having swilled the first directly from the can... even out of the can, the smoke was bold but overall balance of flavors obscured, dull... gonna try the last can (gave one away) cold, see what happens (2143)
