Weyermann Barleywine #10 from Weyermann Braumanufaktur, Bamberg, DE. 330 mL bottle from the Weyermann Fan Shop for about 3€. In reefer at store, purchased April 2023. Reviewed 12/07/23 (Review 3139). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on the rear label “Mindestens haltbar bis: 08.08.2023”. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 54.6 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 60.0 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Pale Amber (SRM 9), clear.
Body – Medium Amber (SRM 12), opaque. Under direct light, same but some small lumps of precipitate are observed. When rear lite, amber, and clear.
Head: Large (Maximum five cm, aggressive center pour), beige, high density, slowly diminishing to a one cm crown and cap.
Lacing – Fair. A couple of mountains of tiny bubbles remain hanging on the glass.
Aroma – 3.5 – Sweet and malty. No yeast, no hops. No ethanol (10.5 % ABV according to the label).
Flavor – 3.75 – Follows the nose. No yeast or hops flavor. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Marked gastric burning but no ethanol flavor.
Palate – 4 – Just short of medium; slightly creamy; soft but lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 Unusual beer to find in Germany but Weyermann produces a limited number of various styles to show the versatility of their malt products. Markedly better than many US barleywines.

330ml bottle served in a little Georgetown snifter sampler glass. Date on the back says "Mindestens haltbar bis: 08.08.2023." Reviewed blind as a mystery beer in NBS BIF #17 (see post #129 on NBW #144). Received from @ozzylizard.

Light brown, clear, with a medium sized head on the pour that settles into a lasting ring with a light dusty island in the center. Seems to be pretty carbonated. Not getting much in the way of smoke – maybe a light hint. Something vaguely fruity about it, though I can’t place what it might be. Might be something esoteric like jackfruit – almost an umami + fruit thing that I can’t identify.
This is hoppy. Grapefruit rind and lemon zest. Really hoppy. Again, an umami hint in the background which works surprisingly well. Bitterness keeps building as I sip it. Really interesting.

Moderately thick, a little syrupy, smooth, nowhere near dry. I guessed it was a double IPA or American barleywine that has been very lightly smoked (that would explain the vague umami-ness that I’m probably imagining because of its supposed origin).

Weyermann Brauerei GmbH "Barleywine"
,33l brown glass bottle, "Mindestens haltbar bis: 25.04.2018" and sampled on 25.09.2017

Notes via stream of consciousness: Number 10. 10.5% abv. Pours a clear deep copper body beneath a full head of frothy off-white that holds well. Aroma of caramelish malt... or is it more like almost burnt sugar syrup that's been dripped on the stove top? Regardless, cooked sugar. Some minor alcohol appears but it's not harsh. Flavor of apple and caramel with some spiciness - is that from hops or yeast or alcohol? It's flavorful but it's not overly full. It's fruitier than most English or American barleywines, but not by too much, and also less malty in general, but still on the right track. The bitterness is limited, but it's not sweet, and it finishes as it should with some residual sweetish malt that's appropriate; but there's also some residual alcohol. In terms of the barleywine style it's certainly not quite "on", but at the same time it's not an unpleasant beer in anyway, and I think it would make a good beer to sit down with and sip at while reading or winding down after dinner. Looking back there's some very nice lacing. It's unique, and not normally what I'd think of as a barleywine - more of a strong ale - but I'd buy it again.

I first tried this on a visit to Cafe Abseits in Bamberg on 24SEP15. Over the course of this visit and 2 visits on the following days I had six 0.33l bottles, at €4.50 each.

It was poured into a small Teku-style tulip. It was a deep amber/chestnut, with a creamy tan head which sat at 1/4" and rested well. It was a touch cloudy and left good lacing behind. Smelled rich and malty, like a typical English Barleywine should. It was verrry smooth going down, and was medium-plus bodywise and chewy.

Taste had lots of maltyness, with rich caramel and light sweetness. It was almost sherry-like, and reminded me of Victory Old Ho (which was bizarre, as I was wearing a Victory Old Ho shirt on the 24th!). Had a touch of dark fruit, like raisins, as well. I found this one quite drinkable. Prosit!!
