Weyermann Barrel Aged Barleywine 16 from Weyermann Braumanufaktur, Bamberg, DE. 330 mL bottle from the Weyermann Fan Shop for about 3€. In reefer at store, purchased April 2023. Reviewed 13/07/23 (Review 3140). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Stamped on the rear label “Mindestens haltbar bis: 08.08.2023”. Stored at 34 degrees at home. Served at 56.3 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 61.7 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Pale Amber (SRM 9), slight haze.
Body – Medium Amber (SRM 12), opaque. Under direct light, same but many lumps of precipitate are observed. When rear lite, amber, and hazy.
Head: Large (Maximum 5.5 cm, aggressive center pour), beige, high density, quickly diminishing to a 0.3 cm crown and a thin, partial cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 3.75 – Sweet and very malty, some weak dark fruit. Weak wood presence. No yeast, no hops. No ethanol (10.5 % ABV according to the label).
Flavor – 4.25 – Follows the nose. No yeast or hops flavor. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. Mild gastric warming but no ethanol flavor, although some ethanol is obvious on exhale. Wood is much more evident than on the nose.
Palate – 4 – Just short of medium; slightly creamy; soft but lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4 Good! Lacks the whiskey notes typical of US barrel-aged beers, but quite tasty.

330ml bottle served in a little Georgetown snifter sampler glass. Date on the back says "Mindestens haltbar bis: 08.08.2023." Reviewed blind as a mystery beer in NBS BIF #17 (see post #129 on NBW #144). Received from @ozzylizard.
Dark amber, tiny amount of carbonation, basically zero head. Clear or at least translucent, based on the pace of the bubbles that do form, it looks pretty thick. Screaming smoke. Somewhere in between campfire and burning charcoal. Couple more whiffs and I get a little nuttiness.
Taste is less one-note than the aroma – super smokey, dates as well. Smoke seems more like charred oak now. Toffee sweetness. Start getting some molasses later on.
Mouthfeel -- I keep getting distracted by new flavor notes when I’m trying to think about the mouthfeel. Body is medium thickness, a little chewy, not nearly as still as the appearance suggested…in fact, a small ring of head has emerged since I started this experience. Overall, I guessed this was a heavily smoked dubbel, mostly due to the dates / raisins. Since this was aged in Ardbeg barrels, the smoke is explained, but I can't believe how much smoke it picked up from the barrels.
