Nearly clear, dark copper color with reddish highlights. Little head on this one and almost no lace at all.
Nicely restrained smoky, peated malt character. Was worried it might overwhelm other aspects of the beer. Light sweetness, gentle fruit character of apples, raisins and prunes, touch of fruitcake spices. Good overall maltiness. Trace booziness.
Near full bodied, with a creamy, rounded, soft mouthfeel and restrained carbonation. I enjoyed this aspect of this beer, aids in easy drinking for its ABV.
Perhaps not all that typical for a wee heavy but I found this to nonetheless be pretty tasty and one of the better beers on offer at the time.

I ordered this on tap from the Iron Hill Brewpub located in Maple Shade New Jersey, I received it in a snifter.
A: It was dark inside, but through the lights it looks clear and deep garnet. I'm not well versed in Wee Heavy's, but I liked how the body looked with it's tan head.
S: A bit weak, slight metallic on the nose with apples and pears coming through slightly.
T: A bit tart upfront, on the level of a granny smith apple, with a sweetness into a roasted malts finish. I enjoyed this, very easy to drink.
M: Creamy and thick, lively carbonation. Very easy to drink.
O: I enjoyed this there was a nice complexity to it with the sweetness from the sugars, tart from the fruit tastes, and a nice roasty finish. I wouldn't order it again, but I would recommend trying it!

Had this at the Maple Shade, NJ location. Was there a mix-up here?!
Perhaps you should read my review of their "Winter Warmer" (Iron Hill will never win any awards for the originality for the names of some of their brews). This is the same ale I had there a little more than 2 months ago, aside from a perceived faint smoked character. I don't look for smoked flavor in a Wee Heavy, though quite many many breweries feel the need to include such a flavor based on false pretenses. The reviewer below stated that Iron Hill didn't use any (peat-)smoked malt, so I'll take his word for it. All in my mind, hmm?
COLOR: too dark - purplish-red
SMELL: too cakey-spicy, thick malt is expected, but not spiced
TASTE: it's a bloody Belgian holiday ale, a la Corsendonk Xmas
FEEL: not full enough - midway. clean with no roll of malt
DRINK: it's alright - it's just NOT a Scotch Ale. Please!
How dare they serve me this sham!

- Named after McMaster-Call, a provider of industrial equipment which supplies a lot of Iron hills needs.
A: Served in a pilsner glass on tap 12-5-09. A dark black with burnt reddish highlights around the edges. The head is creamy, soft and pancake thin being beige in color. Standing initially 1 finger high it soon dissipated to a spotty covering.
S: The nose was limited in complexity but did enough to fill the job. A nice soft roastediness that was fairly clean.
T: The flavor was smooth and roasted with a mild milk creaminess. A nice sense of caramel grains provide sweetness while the roasted malting adds bitterness and blance. The booziness is sweet and sugary while there is a nice deal of grainy huskiness. I detected a slight fruitiness of dried caramel apple grains on the finish giving this a nice intriguing mixture as well as glimpses of sweet caramel chew similar to tootsie rolls coming through. The brewer claims no peat was harmed in the making of this beer, and with the superb job of grain combination was not missed here. A really nice grain combination and blend more then makes up for it. Iron Hill is really coming into their own with their bigger beer offerings. Overall, smooth, creamy, rich and fulfilling with an earthy bitterness.
M: medium creamy with a good coffee roastedness upon warming. Tight and bubbly sensation. Good, if not better them most by style.
D: Again another beer I wish I could drink more then I really should. The booziness is well hidden but eventually catches up to you. Sweet and bitter providing a wide scope of flavor that seamlessly string together to deliver a smooth experience. Get down to try this.
