Howler from brewery. Dark brown, filmy beige head. Sweet (like cola) aroma, nutty. Minor nutty taste, more cola notes. Thin, miniscule bitterness. Average...just.

this one was way off for me, despite the fact that they seem to be pretty proud of it for whatever reason. its thin, too light in both color and body for the style, its approaching flat, still sweet, and lacking any real german identity to the malt or the yeast, which is all to say this that isnt really what it claims to be at all, even if the wort was made in germany, which is what i hear they are doing, its lacking. shiny almost still cognac looking in the glass, no real head after the initial pour and a sort of oxidized and vacuous nose, a little stale but not much going on. maybe slightly bready in aroma and flavor, some honey character backing up whatever is there from the grain, but this is a far cry from the full leathery dark fruity baked bready depth of the best examples of the style, hard to even compare this to that. some finishing sweetness, no real sign of lager yeast, and maybe some minerality beneath it all saving it just a little, but this has a long way to go to be something i want to drink a pint of. definitely still some learning and process improving to do in the brew house here based on where this one is at...
