Appearance: No head, which is really a huge nail in the coffin in this category for a style that's meant to be opaque and black as night, which this beer is. It does show with it's pour a deep brown, but reveals it doesn't possess that thickness that differentiates a Porter from a Stout.
Smell: Well burnt malt, coffee and a slight bit of earth which required some warming to achieve good potency, but not a lot.
Taste: Burnt malt with a hint of toffee that turns to mild coffee and wood notes and finishes us off with a bitter charred note and earth hops.
Mouthfeel: No head and low carbonation, which is just killing the beer. It doesn't let anything accentuate itself. I want to blame the bottle/cap which I guess I could, but the tag on it read bottled on Oct 6th so, not sure what to say there. The aftertaste is predominantly burnt malt that builds on itself a bit too much.
Drinkability: Medium body, which I have no problem with a Porter residing there, and settles down exceptionally well, but that's due to the neigh non-existent carbonation. A lighter alternative to sipping stout which is the niche this beer fills.
Final Thoughts: I had this beer up north and wrote in my notes NEEDS CARB! which really is the story of this beer. It's a serviceable porter, that would probably fare better had at the pub instead of via their bottles...or at least I hope so.
