Collaboration with Great Lakes Brewery
Great Lakes are known for creating some of the best hop-forward beers in Canada so naturally we went to them to collaborate on this classic west coast-style pale ale. Brewed with Ontario grown Cascade and Chinook hops from Hayhoe Hops alongside a touch of Citra and Mosaic, this medium-bodied beer has a dank, resiny hop character with notes of pine and a refreshing hit of citrus and grapefruit on the finish.
Part of the Rising Tide - Collab Mix Pack.

473 mL can from the LCBO; one of four collaborative brews in their "Rising Tide" mixed pack. Packaged Aug 7 2020 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy, translucent golden-blonde colour, generating nearly an inch of foamy, soapy white head that wilts within five minutes or so. A messy coat of lovely lace is flung about in the process, which leaves behind a creamy looking collar encircling a filmy-thin cap. Looks great, but I'm less enthused about the nose - it's quite spicy and grassy, with a fair bit of pine resin and floral hop character; lesser notes of citrus and passion fruit are also discernible.
It tastes along the same sort of lines - there's a touch of grainy pale malts and light honeyed sweetness, but the hops (the Chinook in particular) dictate the flavour profile for the most part. I'm getting grapefruit and orange towards the forefront, joined by passion fruit soon thereafter; the tail end of the sip takes on more of a resiny, floral, somewhat spicy & earthy hop character that isn't overtly bitter, at least IMO. Medium-light in body, with moderately low carbonation that provides a little bit of a bit to the brew's smooth, relatively soft mouthfeel. This is a fine, drinkable APA that I polished off with no fuss whatsoever, but I wouldn't exactly single it out as unique or memorable.
Final Grade: 3.96 on B+. Wellington & Great Lakes' WCPA is a well done rendition of an increasingly sidelined style of pale ale. It's about on par with, if not slightly better than, GLB's Canuck Pale Ale - a beer that I return to regularly, so that's meant as a favourable comparison. A worthy sampler pack inclusion - try it while it's still fresh if you're able, but it's not something I'd search high and low for.

Pours an amber colour with a thick foamy head. The smell is at bit sweet and hoppy. The taste adds toffee and grassy hints. Quite a nice flavourful West Coast Pale Ale

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. Cost comes out to $3.50 for a can. Canned August 7, 2020
Appearance - Hazy rich dark golden color with a finger of loose white head. Moderate staying power and a little bits of lacing cling to the glass in no discernable pattern. Some visible carbonation.
Smell - Earthy and dank hops some overripe mango and hints of grapefruit and lemon.
Taste - Largely the same as the nose with even more earthy mustiness and the grapefruit and lemon are still present, the mango is gone. A touch spicy to close everything out. A little resin in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, carbonation is middling, everything just solid for the style.
Overall - Pretty good opening act from the Rising Tide collaborations although a pale ale with GLB is always a good decision.
