Collaboration with Nickel Brook Brewing Co.

Our buds from the Funk Lab at Nickel Brook have the art of brewing sours down to a science, so it only seemed natural to create a delicious dry-hopped sour with them. This bright and lively beer has clean lactic sour notes with hints of strawberry and cherry from the unique Barbe Rouge hops. We finished this tasty sour with a load of wild blueberries and pear juice to make this an irresistibly tangy treat.

Part of the Rising Tide - Collab Mix Pack.

473 mL can from the LCBO; one of four collaborative brews in their "Rising Tide" mixed pack. Packaged Aug 7 2020 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a muddied magenta-purple colour, capped off with one finger of foamy, pale pink-tinged head that melts away within several minutes' time. It leaves behind a narrow band of even lace, as well as a filmy cap and thin collar - looks alright, but that hue is its most attractive feature. Mildly tart and a bit fruity on the nose - blueberry, raspberry, pear and apple juice, with hints of lemon, cherry and blackberry - I really like the aroma on this one, as the berries and pear complement each other beautifully.

A mellow fruited sour - the blueberry flavour comes through nicely, accompanied by hints of pear, apple and cranberry, as well as a subtle wheaty malt sweetness in the background. Hints of yogurty lacto tartness towards the finish, which includes more blueberry, raspberry and lemon prior to a mildly fruity aftertaste of berries. Light-medium in body, with moderate carbonation levels that prickle and prod the surface of the tongue, lending a bit of crispness to this brew's soft, somewhat fluffy texture. Good drinkability - maybe even sessionable.

Final Grade: 3.75, a B+. Wellington and Nickel Brook's Blueberry & Pear DHS is a decent fruited beer / soured ale that mostly rubbed me the right way. It's not particularly sour, the pear flavour is a little on the skimpy side, and the dry hop elements are somewhat masked by the blueberry, but I still spent more time appreciating this beer vs. focusing on its flaws. Glad I had the chance to try this, even though the 'Come and Float' tagline sounds like a veiled threat from a Stephen King novel.

Pours the colour of watermelon juice. No head. The smell is tart like sour raspberries. Taste is very sour and tart and funky. Maybe blueberry flavour but not pear. Sour beers aren’t my thing, so maybe I’m biased

473 ml can purchased as part of the seasonal mix pack. Cost was $3.50 CDN per can. Canned August 7, 2020.

Appearance - Bright pinkish/blue color with magenta hues. Two fingers of pinkish white head rest on top. Good head retention and some curtain lacing left behind.

Smell - Leafy hops with some blueberry, hints of tartness. A suggestion of apple or pear.

Taste - Lefay hops again dominate with blueberries present. Medium sourness levels. Not much pear if any.

Mouthfeel - Medium-light bodied with good crisp carbonation. Drying finish and tart on the tongue.

Overall - Good looking beer that falls a bit short as the leafy blueberry and pear combo washes out and is kind of sour but doesn't necessarily have much if any pear flavor. Ok attempt, but not a great sour.
