Inspired by our original Black Knight Porter recipe from the 90's, the classic English-style porter pours deep brown with ruby highlights and a lasting tan head. Smooth roasted malt, dark chocolate and caramel notes give way to hints of dried fruit and nut. We've even brough back the retro label for this special release. Cheers to 40 Years!

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Wellington's 40th Anniversary mixed pack. Dated Oct 23 2025 and served barely chilled.

Pours a dark brown colour, taking on more of a blood red hue when held to a bright light. Two fingers of lumpy, foamy, light tan-coloured head rises from the surface, fading steadily within the next five minutes; afterwards, a thick band of lace sticks to the glass, with a frothy collar lasting on. Roasted malts, burnt grains and very light smoke on the nose, with accents of caramel and dark chocolate. Nothing to get excited about, but appropriate for the style.

It tastes alright - I'm getting roasted malts at the forefront, which impart notes of dark chocolate and light roast coffee. There's also some bready malts, caramel and hints of dried fruits, with earthy hops and burnt/roasted grains rounding out the back end. Light in body and a bit thin, with moderate carbonation that adds some prickliness to this porter's otherwise smooth mouthfeel. Easy to drink quickly; too generic to be worth taking your time to savour, anyhow.

Final Grade: 3.61, a B grade. Black Knight is a rather pedestrian, largely forgettable English porter, but I don't think there's anything actually flawed here. It's competently brewed, and reasonably flavourful for only 4.5%; it's just not especially interesting - I don't consider that a fatal flaw, but your mileage may vary. I'd likely buy this once in a while if it were sold as a single, but it'd be a coin flip between this and their County Dark.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, 473mL in a pint glass. From their Craft Classics 6-pack at my favourite LCBO at Tecumseh Mall in nearby Windsor. Canned October 23/25. My 14th beer from the Guelph, Ontario brewery, and 7th for 2026. With Sundae the cat's tacit permission, and love...

From Notes

Appearance: One finger of head, not creamy though, more like light lager head. The body is black is knight, but you can clearly see see a lot of bubbles on the side.

Smell: Slight smoke with burnt malt. Warming helps it come out a bit more. It's ok. Nothing bad, nothing great.

Taste: Starts with porter burnt malt but then it suffers an identity crisis as it turns to a dry pale ale, bread taste with a clear mineral note. I drew a :( here.

Mouthfeel: Carbonation is too aggressive and accents the pale ale note which is out of place here. Transitioning is fine, but the aftertaste has a weird mineral cling.

Drinkability: Settles down better then expected, but as it comes across as medium-light body but that a problem. It is too dry because it's trying to be a pale ale.

Final Thoughts: A rare swing and an miss from Wellington. I wholly understand why that despite this beer being a recipe from 90's I haven't see it until now. I have to say, I'd be fine not to see it again.
