With one foot firmly on American craft beer ground and the other in Japan, Dogfish Head brings both worlds together with a rice lager that’s crisp, clean and refreshing.

Pale straw and bubbly, Tasty Traveler rises with a soft and arid froth along with a mild floral hop scent filled with spice, grain and scant suggestions of sweetness. Cracer-like, wafer and softly cereal, the early taste brings hints of malty sweetness.

The dryness and bubbly mouthfeel ushers out the sweetness and brings in the hops with a light citrus, herbal and grassy bite. Light apple and lemon present to the middle palate before falling off to a dry, peppery and grassy finish.

Light, crisp and refreshing for sure, Tasty Traveler is a comforting beer flavored beer that seems to side with session IPA or brut IPA because of its citrusy hop tilt.

From the can, it pours a clear light yellow color with a nice white head that reduces but does leave some lacing. The nose gets some fruitiness, particularly lemon, followed by the mouth getting the same with a light malt lager beneath.

My can lists slightly different ingredients than some earlier. Mine says : Brewed with Jasmine Rice, Lemongrass, Honey and Makrut Lime Leaf. I'm sure the recipe changes with resulting experiments and ingredient availability. But I'm sure Tasty Traveler has a good history, however short. Because of the richness of jasmine rice, I'd style Tasty as a Japanese Rice Lager. But why quibble? Just enjoy this balanced beverage.

Tasty paired well with tonight's yakisoba (buckwheat noodles.) The rice was a light counter to the heft of buckwheat. And the yakisoba's flavorings seemed to be from a similar kitchen that Dogfish had in mind when they crafted this batch.

So... what are we to make of the parent (Boston Beer) making itself ready for a global brand manager? If Dogfish is allowed to experiment and continue to craft beer as fine as Tasty, they we faithful recipients should have nothing to fear and years of enjoyment ahead of us. One of our most inventive crafters, let Dogfish flourish !

Poured from a can into a pint glass. Pours orange yellow with a white head. Smells of cereal grain and slight fruit. Tastes of sweet grain with very nice fruit notes. Beer is light bodied and easy drinking, good carbonation. Overall, a very good beer.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The brew pours a clear golden-straw color with a two finger height head of white foam. The head fades quickly over time, leaving some bubbly lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is light overall, but biggest in a corn and cracker malt smell mixed with a lemon aroma. Along with these smells comes a little bit of lime and must.
Taste – Not sure what salicornia tastes like, so not sure if it is in the flavor profile or not. The taste starts with a slightly lemon sour corn and grain cracker malt taste. There is some light lime as well, which gets stronger as the taste advances. At the same time there is a touch of hay and a bit more corn that joins in, leaving one with a slightly sour and crisp taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The brew has a thin body with a higher carbonation level. For the style and the more sour citrus tastes the feel is good and makes for a more crisp sipper.
Overall – An OK brew, but a bit too much sourness for a Mexican lager for my taste.

A very nice, easy drinking lager. The hint of lime is really refreshing. If your looking for the next step up from mass distribution lagers then this is it.

12 oz. can, looks like best by of January 2024.

"Lager brewed with Salicornia and Lime Juice" Full discretion, no idea what salicornia is.

A: Crisp golden. One finger of frothy white cream head. Spotty lacing. Looks like a lager. Fresh & appealing look.
S: Initial aromas are crisp, clean, grainy. Kind of light; no overt or obvious traces of lime.
T: Again, comes of smooth, crisp, grainy, super interesting; but then comes the blast of tart lime zest which is actually quite refreshing and tasty. Not overly bitter like how lime sometimes is; this is one is nicely balanced.
F: Smooth, crisp, clean. Light-bodied, easy-drinking, good modest abv.

Overall, I was actually more impressed with this than I thought I would be. The addition of lime was a nice surprise.

12oz can. Poured out a clear, golden yellow color with a small, rocky head of foam. It left sudsy trails of lace on the glass. It smelled of caramel, grains, lime and some saltiness. Sweet caramel taste with lime and a mild bitterness.
