Collaboration with de Garde Brewing
Block 15 and De Garde's Amusement series is a rotating seasonal project that blends friendship, technique, and beer from both breweries. Winter Amusement features a winter saison from Block 15 blended with nearly two year old spontaneously fermented and oak aged wild ale from de Garde, producing a balanced and characterful blend that will also evolve beautifully when cellared.

an awesome blend here, on beer from these guys, one from de garde, amazing to find the 2019 vintage on tap, wonderful stuff. this is a little deeper in color than pale saison, more malt to it, toasty and warm, still spontaneous, woody, and funky, but more grain centered than many, which i like in a winter context. i get some nuttiness to it, some front end sweetness, and seasonal hints of chestnut, raisin, maple, and toffee, although even with this elevated grain position, its still the fermentation profile that makes this for me. its lightly tart but not real acidic, especially at the end, and the depth of flavor is amazing. i get some lambic type wild character, a fruity saison yeast ester, and lots of vinous properties. things like cognac, dried orange peel, unlit cigar, and brandy are also there in the taste, and this finishes oddly fast for how complex it is. nice carbonation from the tap, just a little bit of flattering oxidation, and it opens up really well as i let it sit. overall this is fantastic beer, maybe not quite as epic to me as the spring amusement edition, but every bit as good as the summer one, and downright killer. i love these two breweries on their own, so no surprise at all that their collaborations also crush! a treat to drink!

32oz crowler served in a WABL sample glass. Got the crowler today at The Bine in Bothell.
Pours a ruby-amber, pretty clear, initially with a really big head that fades down and doesn't leave a lot of head. Smell is a little funk and a lot of something kind of herbal. I get some yeast and maybe something metallic.
Taste is somewhere in between a saison and a Belgian dubbel? Moderate to light tartness, more funk and earthiness, Light toffee note, the herbal characteristic is there but milder.
Mouthfeel is not too thin but quite dry. Overall...not really sure what to think of this beer. It's not bad. It's definitely farther down the "wild" path than I usually enjoy. I think it would grow on me drinking a bit more of it.

Thanks, Sam!
A clear, effervescent light amber with a dense white head with good retention and lacing, this looks great! The nose is solid. Green apple, honey, citrus, a rustic grain note, melon, a touch of yogurt are present. At this point, the grainy, mildly spicy saison and the funky de Garde beer are in good balance.
The palate opens a little thin with a blend of deep spices (nutmeg, pepper, a little mace) you go with the grainy, lactic sour notes. Notes of apple, melon and a little grape are present and continue thru the midpalate.
Disjointed, this beer finishes with a lactic and lemony sourness to go with earth and spice notes. Medium light in body, highly carbonated and a little watery, this beer is fun to drink.
