generally only lukewarm on american made clean saison, i prefer the old world, the rustic, the funky, but this is neat, and part of a cool series of saison types which appear to be exploring different yeasts, would have loved to stay and tango with a few more of them, but the place was maxed out when we were in and it was just a quick visit as a result. i was impressed with the overall quality and refinement of this though, and think its quite well done. blonde and crystal clear, this level of clarity always confuses me a little with this style, which i expect to look unfiltered most of the time, but this one is approaching immaculate, golden, with an almost inch of white head lasting the whole drink, looks good in the teku glass they serve it in here at the brewery. the nose and taste run parallel, and i am immediately taken by this being as hoppy as it is, not bitter, but herbal, unique, vanilla and lemon curd, partially familiar and partially foreign, way cool with this yeast, which has high tone esters but isnt phenolic or candy-like, instead its cooked pear and apple, elderflower, and light toffee from a little richer grain in here playing that up, obviously some funk would rule in this, but i dont mind it as it is because of the rest of the beer is so layered. an added sugar element, honey and rock candy, almost a baby tripel or something, also cool with the fruity yeast esters. yellow and orang skittles, some late sweetness, a floral white wine note, green grape, dried pineapple, late lime. warms up well, yeast driven but not dominated which is cool, the unique and robust hopping really makes this cool, and overall this is all you can really hope for from clean saison made in this country, lots of love for the effort, and good enough to make me regret not being able to get to try the others in the series. this is fun, playful even, and very well put together!
