Got this one on a whim...

A: nice penny copper color with hints of ruby highlights. Tiny head that quickly fades to a lace atop the brew. Decent.

S: some nice bready oak scents hints of some floral and caramel scents on the backend. Decent.

T: kind of a oaky wine flavor upfront. Some earthy apple in the middle blended with rye and some faint caramel on the backend. Good.

M: thick body with a heavy carbonation. Decent.

D: once you get past the thick carbonation this goes down. Good.

All in all, this was a better brew than expected. I have not liked anything from NS yet, but this one is the best so far. Not worth hunting, but try if u have access.

Poured copper/orange, with a healthy dosage of visible carbonation, about a finger of white head, average retention, and average lacing. Very biscuit and malty in the nose. The taste was extremely malty, but not in a good way, and finished on a bitter earthy note. Very carbonated mouthfeel. Not a great example of the style.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a impressive head that leaves a bit of lacing behind

Smell: Bread and caramel, with a hint of graininess underneath

Taste: Lots of big Vienna malt flavors, up front, with caramel dominant and a twinge of grainy twang developing by mid-palate, along with a hint of fusel alcohol; after the swallow, the fruity flavors emerge amidst the sweet caramel backbone

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation and a little warmth from the high abv for the style

Drinkability: A very decent, if unusually big Marzen; the high abv and the concomitant sweetness limits the drinkability somewhat

12oz long neck. Consumed 12/31/09

A) Pours with a finger thick head. Creamy and settles just slightly. Lacing is thin, creamy and fairly sticky. Mellow upward carbonation. Just a bit of haze. Bronze in color.
S) Caramel. Grainy. subtle hints of tree fruit - apple, plum.
T) Caramel. Nutty. Hints of citrus bite. Grainy. Starts with caramel and a spicy nip. Then moves to a nutty grain. Finishes with lingering malt and grain.
M) Fairly smooth. Light to medium body. Some tannin feel in the finish.
D) A decent Marzen.

Need to try more of the Newport Storm Cyclone series as I hear they are good, but I haven't tried many.

A: Pours a light head with some fluff and big bubbles. Brilliantly clear pale golden toasty orange color. Very nice lookin.

N: Pretty nice here too, crisp lager aromas, some light malts, some earthy marzen style malts, toasty aromas, some sweetness, and even some light fruit, almost get a fig newton aroma.

T: Starts fruity of all flavors. Some juicy fruit flavors, bright fruits, peach, mango, strawberry, banana, all blended together in a smoothie. Some light malts and sweetness follow. SOme crisp lager flavors, but faint. Very light toasted flavors. Very smooth for being almost 8% abv. A little bit of creamy butterscotch flavor as well. Lots of random flavors seem to blend together, they seem to blend pretty well surprisingly, but perhaps should all be there.

M: Medium body, with decent carbonation, smooth but a little syrupy.

F: Finishes semi bitter, and still a little sweet. The fruit flavor seem to just dangle on your tongue for a little bit. It doesn't finish as crisp as I'd hoped. The fruit blend sticks to the mouth with the sticky syrup like malt flavors and don't seem to want to go away.

Grabbed this one out of the fridge randomly for dinner this evening. Not sure what to make of it off the label so dive right in. Served cold and poured into a pint glass, this one was consumed on 11/09/2009.



Nice pour here with a medium amber color and nice clarity. Head of maybe two inches comes up and over the top initially but fades down into a smooth and even coating that lasts throughout the session. Nice lacing on the sides and the bottom as well. Aroma is nice, bready and earth at first with a nice touch of light bittering hops. Warming brings out a hint of grassy notes with a smooth and even nature to it. Nice and crisp, light clove and banana flavor give way to a very nice mix of herbal hops and touches of light grain. Crisp and clean finish caps it all off very well.



Overall a very solid and very session able ale here. I would have no issues at all with trying this one again any day. Really very well done I have to say.

Single from Charles St. Liquors. No notch, but from looking at the reviews, it seems like this was bottled up towards the end of May.

Pint glass pour. Inch plus of off dough, off-white head with good staying power. Clear, slightly dulled, orange amber body.

Smells of sticky beer residue & toffee upfront, bodied up with macerated Cheerios, crusty bread, & a couple of raisins. Light leafy hops sharpen up the nose towards the back.

Taste is upfront with honey, lettuce, & dry toast. Feel is near terrible though. A jellied, & almost gritty feel. Sharper caramel as it goes. Very low carbonation. It does dry out at the end, but that required considerable endurance to swallow. Gentle sprinkle of bitterness at the end. The alcohol is very mellow, so I guess as a lager, that kicks back another half a point.

Middle of the road, but it should of been better.

A: Nice amber color, slightly copper with an off white head about half an inch thick that quickly disappears leaving only a few bubbles around the edges of the glass. Fairly cloudy but still nice looking.

S: Big time pale malts and a huge honey profile in the nose as well. Smells like a malt bomb, surprisingly not a touch of alcohol, impressive for being almost 8%.

T: The taste is exactly like the nose, huge and malty, caramel, honey, just a slight bit of alcohol on the tongue as well. Really a malt bomb. Tons of honey flavors.

M: Has a pretty thick body, light carbonation, and dry, the alcohol, while not warm definitely dries out the mouth. Nice.

D: Easy drinking beer, really easy drinking in fact. If this was on tap at a bar, I'd go straight for this, even with the high alcohol, this is a tasty beer I could session all night.

Poured from a 12-ounce bottle into a Saranac pint glass.

A: Poured a dull, golden amber color with a bit of chilled haze and ample carbonation despite being shelved for an indeterminate amount of time. Head retention and lacing were not great, though.

S: Smells slightly sweet and bready, with hints of apple, floral hop aromas and a bit of alcohol.

T: Tastes nice and rich with roasted caramel malts which lend of a nice toffee flavor. This is swept immediately into a fruity ale compound of apple, fig and a little bit of raisin. It all washes away with a nice malty finish coupled with a slight sting of alcoholic bitterness.

M: Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with a smooth and slightly creamy feel to it.

D: Despite being nearly an 8% ABV Oktoberfest, this really is one of the smoothest, tastiest American marzens I've had. Complex in it's fruitiness and with a residual alcohol sting, but still well crafted and balanced. Maybe you couldn't session it, but I'd always welcome it to my glass. Nice!

This one is a limited release and the only Maerzen I;ve had this season that fits that bill. It is 7.5% alc and certainty higher significantly than average.

This is the only fresh Maerzen I have had this season with noticeable murkiness and sediment. The body of this beer looks like honey with wisps of yeast and other sediment swirled throughout going from dark at the top to light on the bottom, a stunning looking beer. The head is 3 fingers tall and slightly off-white, and as it recedes it leaves some major lacing behind.

Alcohol is noticeable on in the nose, the scent is a sweet malt, with a smattering of earthy hops. Also some nutty roastiness in this one. A good smelling Maerzen right here.

The flavor is not unlike Ayinger's Oktoberfest, but with a noticeable kick of alcohol that produces some extra bitterness. It is sweet but not as sweet as I was expecting.

Overall it is a good Maerzen, nothing too special, but high abv if you are looking for that. For this style the drinkability is understandably rather low.

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color lager with a medium foamy head with average retention and some lacing. Aroma of sweet malt with a nice dose of cereal notes with light floral undertone. Taste is heavier then expected with a malt heavy backbone, light sweetness with nice fresh floral cereal aftertaste. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well done and heavier then most example I have tried from this style.

Nice medium golden, orange with good clarity, forms a small bone white head that quickly settles into a thin foam cover with slightly more foam and small bubbling around edge, very light lacing.

Good smells of fresh grains, earthy and grassy notes. Taste is very interesting as there is a strong sweet malty base like fresh homebaked bread from good white flour, but at midpalate a contrasting bitterness makes an appearance from grassy tasting hops and that builds into the finish until after long finish I am left with a bitter, dry mouthwatering sense that leads me to want to take another drink. This is a really well crafted little beer. I get very good mouthcoating from a luxurious, almost heavy cream like feel, but there is a definite tickling level of carbonation which keeps that from being a completely apt comparison.

Much too strong to sit back and have a session at the bar, but it certainly tastes like it would be an ideal beer for that purpose.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a pilsner glass.

Liquid is burnt orange with with tangerine and amber highlights topped by a persistent finger of ivory foam. Carbonation is pronounced. Chill haze dissipates after the beverage warms a bit. Good lacing.

Very clean yet succulent aroma of malt with a hint of blood orange zest. Freshly ground wheat flour and spring water round out the nose.

Palate is delicately sweet but not sugary, with some slight bitterness and a slow building English biscuit flavor among other malty complexities. Finish could be a little more dry, but the flavor is well balanced none the less.

Relatively thick mouthfeel, thanks to the ABV I imagine - quite dense for a lager, though still quaffable. There is a residual hint of jam-like stickiness, but this doesn't detract from the refreshing nature of the beer. High carbonation, though it seems to settle down by the time I got half-way finished drinking it.

A very pleasant surprise, and a great domestic take on the style - too bad this is no longer produced as it would go on my short-list of lagers that I actually enjoy.

The bottle starts to foam over when opened. I poured more gingerly than usually. A small head resulted but with great lasting time. Light lace that slides down the glass. Slight haze to a dark gold/light amber liquid.

Malty aroma with light floral hop that is significant yet secondary.

A well-balanced marzen--more malt than hop as to be expected. The only surprise is the high alcohol content, which I cannot detect in the taste. Smooth beer that feels more like an ale.

The first beer I've reviewed from the state of my birthplace, Rhode Island. 12oz bottle with a notch-less best by date. Thanks to Jwale73 for including this as an extra!

A 7.9% ABV Marzen in August? Tis the season! (well, almost) Kim pours with a rusty copper hue, golden at the edges and hazy with yeast towards the bottom. On the other end, the head retains well as a thick cap of khaki foam. Really nice aroma on this beer; it's subtle, yet the deeper you dig, the more you discover. Soft Amber and Vienna(?) malts lend notes of toasted bread and nuttiness, while brown sugar-covered yellow squash and pumpkin pulp add a balancing sweetness and some vegetal notes. Perhaps some nutmeg and allspice lurking in the sea of maltiness as well.

Kim is one of the tougher beers I've tried to describe, as nothing too pronounced reaches out and takes charge of the flavor on the front of the tongue except for a light maltiness. Quickly, though, this Marzen builds to an impressive sweetness mid-palate that harbors a spiced, yet still very well-hidden alcohol presence. Soft, toasted malts on the finish pair with a gentle hopping. Mouthfeel is nearly full-bodied, and the carbonation level is perfect, making for a creamy, savory drink. All in all, an excellent example of the style--a tad on the strong side--but what do you expect with a name like "Coastal Extreme Brewing"? Recommended.

12oz. bottle served in a standard pint.; freshnes date not notched on the bottle. Poured a translucent copper with a half inch, loose, off-white head that quickly dissipated into a broken skim. Nose was malty sweet, caramel notes and a hint of nuttiness towards the back. Taste consistent with nose. Mouthfeel was medium/light with a pleasant, consistent background effervescence through and through. This is one of the most drinkable Marzens that I think I've ever had. Absolutely delicious, with a well-hidden abv. It's a shame it's so limited.

appearance - Golden orange color, small head that faded.

smell - The aroma is of caramelized malts, larger yeast, touches of fruit & spices and a good amount of hops.

taste -Deep falvor of malt, some hops, lots of flavor in this

mouthfeel - Medium body.

drinkability - Very tastey, as I said lots of flavor. Might be one of my favorite Cyclone Series beers I have had. Worth a try.

Pours a solid copper color.. very little head to it and minimal amount of lacing. Aroma is a bit lacking, nothing notable detected. Appearance wise I was expecting something little darker for a marzen.. looks like a pale ale to me. Taste is interesting... pretty big hop profile and definitely a big warming affect from the high ABV.. kinda overpowers the beer. Nice body and mouthfeel to the beer but any good tasting notes are hidden by the burn of the alcohol. Decently drinkable but just not enough non-ethanol based flavor for my liking, I liked a lot of the other Newport Storm series but Kim just isn't cutting it for me.
