Pours a dark mahogany brown and settles so very close to black in the glass with a sudsy tan head that lingers for a while. Beautiful doppelbock.

The nose tells the tale of this beer, with lots of caramel and toffee right up front, followed by a nice fig newton note, and a bit of booze.

The taste is a perfect balance of the caramel, toffee and the dried fig flavor, with a nice alcohol warming at the back of the palate from the barrel. Wow.

The mouthfeel is full and edges toward creamy, on point for this beer. This is such a pleasure to drink.

On tap at the brewery.
Pour a leather brown with a nice khaki head that develops with a combination of silky, fine bubbles, and larger luminescent globes. Decent retention with tiny soapy, spots of lazing.
The nose has a smooth, lmildly warm bourbon note leading the way for a gentle malt notes. Hens of wet, brown bread, dough and raisins come through as well.
Flavor definitely carries that hint of bourbon, but allows for some caramel, a hint of fig, a mile tobacco note and some fruit that’s hard to nail down along the line of stewed apple or maybe cherry. There’s also a hint of candy sugar that’s been charred a little extra.
Mountfield is medium with an almost fluffy, elegant mouthfeel.

Packaged September 18th, 2024 - enjoyed August 2nd, 2025 - poured from a 12oz can into my Celebrator doppelbock glass.

Nearly impenetrable cordovan body with auburn highlights and a fine dun cap. Silky lacing, faint legs, excellent retention.

Melanoidin rich malt aroma with hints of toffee, toast, coffee, and figs.

Potent malt and booze up front with vanilla, caramel, chestnut, pipe tobacco, baker's chocolate, and faint char. Long, medium-dry finish with some residual heat. Barrel presence is strong but not overpowering. Mild bitterness...vague hints of earth and cherry in the aftertaste.

Faintly oily/syrupy mouthfeel - light astringency. Decent carbonation.

Just short of stupendous - an excellent base beer with hefty bourbon notes.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours very dark - pretty much black. A relatively thin layer of light brown head quickly disappears. On the nose, I'm getting smoke, roasted malts, burnt wood, a metallic note, and maybe some tar. No sweetness that I can detect.

The taste is more approachable than the nose. Getting a faint hint of toffee here, but still big notes of tobacco, coffee, roasted malts, oak, char, and some black licorice. Over time, I do start to get some dark fruit come through, but it's still fairly light in that area. Very interesting beer. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, and the aftertaste is a black licorice/burnt toffee taste.

Poured from a twelve ounce can, the body is black with a light mocha colored head. Nice lacing.

Aroma is light barrel and a note of fresh bread sweetness.

Taste follows nose but the flavors are amplified, especially the barrel. There's a brief glimpse of booze that quickly recedes. As might be expected, more booze is tasted as the chill came off the beer though still not hot.

Luxurious mouthfeel, weighty and soft. Things dry up quickly with only a bit of light boozy sweet malt on finish.
