Now in its third consecutive year, the “Biffvitational” ski race is an annual fundraising event organized to benefit long-time friend of Tröegs, Jeff “Biff” Beinhaur, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November 2012. Since its inception, Jeff’s friends and the local skiing community have rallied around the event to help create a successful fundraising campaign for Jeff and his family. For this year’s event at Ski Roundtop, Jeff (an avid home-brewer) visited our brewery to assist in the creation of a Scratch Beer that harkens back to our original Tröegs ESB. Using some notes from his previous homebrew recipes, we made a few tweaks to our ESB to create Scratch #167, a beer we’ve dubbed “Extra Special Biff” in honor of Jeff.

Cellar temp 12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. Gift from my brother in a mix 6er.
The beer pours a cloudy chestnut color with lots of sediment chunks. A creamy eggshell white head of 2 cm foams up and fades slowly to a sturdy surface layer.
Aroma is some caramel and a bit of biscuity malt with hints of grassy hops. But I also get some butterscotch notes mixed in. Diacetyl maybe?
First sip reveals a crisp texture and fine tingly carbonation. Easy to drink beer.
Flavor is some biscuit malt and a bit of grassy hops, non of the butterscotch on the nose. The finish is also some slightly bitter grassy and aspirin astringent hops. Not overly bitey but that is the flavor I get. Booze hidden, and finish is dry.
I was concerned with the sediment and butterscotch notes, but this turned out ok. Worth a shot if you can get it and like ESB. I drop the score a bit due to the sediment but otherwise good.

Not bad. Smoking, and then not much.
