Starting with a blend of pale malt and wheat along with honey malt - a pale Canadian barley with a distinctive sweet finish - Scratch #33 includes orange peel, coriander, elderflower and honey bush for a subtle fruit balance that complement...s the pepper zest of Saison du Pont yeast. Following the boil, the wort passed through our hopback (filled with spices) and then began a rapid ferment at a higher than typical temperature for an ale yeast. Following fermentation, Scratch #33 was bottle-conditioned with Westmalle yeast and warm-aged for two weeks to create a vibrant carbonation with an effervescent finish.

Extra from DavoleBomb, thanks!

A: Pours a pale amber with a huge, ridiculous fluffy white head. Fades at a medium pace, zero lacing.

S: Big bright and crisp aroma. Quite peppery. Some apple. Light toasty bread with some belgian yeast. Some grass in there too.

T: Up front it's grass with some lemons and orange. Yeasty bread in the middle with some wheat maybe? Turns earthy and spicy with some pepper towards the back end. Finishes grassy with apples and little bit of funk.

M: Medium bodied, crisp and refreshing.

O: Not a bad saison at all. Smooth and refreshing. Fairly simple and enjoyable. Great summer beer I would say.

Awesome extra from davolebomb

Pours a hazy deep orange with a huge slightly tan head...not really the most attractive looking beer.

Belgian yeast dominates the nose in a very good way with some banana in there

The taste is a little funky on the first sip but after a few it becomes a very nice mandarin orange like taste with some slight black pepper on the end

Mouthfeel is light and dry like a good saison should be carbonation is still pretty lively even after 2 years in a cellar

Overall for its age and what it is(troegs test batch) this beer is pretty dam good...it would be nice to see something like this go into seasonal production

Thanks to Davolebomb for hooking me up with this one.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Pours a very lively, clear amber color. A big, two finger off white head lingers on top. Some spotted lacing is left behind.

S: Lots of spices up front. Big blast of black pepper and lots of belgian yeast aromas. There is a flowery and somewhat fruity aromatic quality as well.

T: Matches the aroma quite well. Lots of spices, belgian yeast, and a mild fruitiness all meld together. The spices are very prevalent though, a little too much for my liking.

M: The feel is pretty much what you want with a summertime saison. It is somewhat dry with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a nice crisp and light bitter finish, perfect for a summer day.

O: There wasn't anything spectacular about this saison, a worthy example of the style nevertheless. The spices were a little on the intense side for my liking, but overall, not a bad offering.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Beer pours a hazy copper with two fingers of foamy head. Head dissipated quickly to a thin film, leaving no lacing. Plenty of tiny bubbles rising quickly from the bottom of the glass.

Nose if fruity esters, apple, bubble gum, biscuit malts. Yeast spice notes as the beer warms a bit.

Taste follows the nose, fruity esters and malt sweetness. A bit more caramel in the flavor than in the nose. Fairly dry finish with a lingering apple fruity ester flavor.

Medium body with plenty of fine carbonation, soft on the tongue but very carbonated.

Thanks to StormKing47 for sending me this bottle.

The beer pours a yellow-orange color with a large white head. The aroma is very fruity and very sweet. I get quite a bit of orange and Belgian yeast, along with some candy corn and circus peanut notes.

The flavor is better than the aroma. I get a lot of orange citrus notes, as well as some sugary sweetness and some Belgian yeast notes. The alcohol is well hidden.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Served in a flared pokal.

Thanks to the Central PA group from the Gang Bang BIF for this bottle!

The Scratch Beer Dash continues. This leg pours a cloudy straw topped by a finger of off-white foam. The nose comprises fake pine, caramel, and powdered sugar. The taste holds notes of caramel, (real) pine, balsa, and honey. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a kinda syrupy feel. Overall, a pretty decent saison, but one that suffers from a strangely off smell. I didn't get much of the spicing, either, making me think this one may be a casualty of age right now.

Pours a dark gold into the glass with a robust white pillow-like head. Great color, though definitely not as light as your typical saison. If I had to guess I would have said the abv was on the high side based on the color and texture (but would have been incorrect, of course).

Smell is very spicy, clove and a peppery smell, with sweet notes and slightly more clove as it warms. The spice is aggressive, but not to the beer's detriment.

Taste has the expected spiciness on the front end but I don't feel like it quite keeps it together. I'm going to chalk that up to the age of the brew, which hasn't done as much as you would think to damage the overall brew.

The middle palate on this beer has a pretty aggressive carbonation, but that eventually fades into a nice fleeting sweetness.

A- Hazy amber color with a huge head, pour it carefully. Even with a careful pour you will have to wait for the head to fall before you can get all of the bottle in your glass. Head falls slowly and leaves some nice lace on the glass.

S- Banana, clove, pepper, coriander, orange peel, and Belgian yeast notes dominate the nose.

T- Taste follows the nose with the finish being very dry and crisp with a slight bite of hop bitterness and sour funk.

M- Medium in body and high in carbonation . Clean and refreshing summer beer.

O- Nicely done beer, an easy drinker, and the 6% ABV isn’t over the top. Too bad it was a one off, this would be a great seasonal offering.

It was the scratch beer festival night! i had spent a good deal of time collecting these and finally tracked down the last of what i needed and put them all down in a massive tasting. Split with my brother in law and his buddy on 5/6, these were all split into 6 ounce samplers.

Great pour here just cloudy as could be with a huge head of white that seriously looked like it could go on for ever. Settling down after a few moments it left quite an impression on the sides of the glass and really left some nice, intricate lacing all along. Aroma is light grassy notes, pears, apples, touches of a light peppery spice and lots of grain that seemingly brought it all together. As I take the first sip, a wave of light, well carbonated and crisp, clean flavor washes across the palate. Light grasses, heather, herbal flowers, touches of spiced apple and a light tartness that cleans the palate quite well. Very smooth as each sip is seamless and very easy to finish. Long, dry ending leaves you thirsty, yet satisfied and allows the subtle fruit notes to really pop.

Overall a very solid Saison
