Here at Tröegs, we love competition and friendly rivalries among our co-workers. Every two years, we host a homebrew competition called The Metal Brewer. In November 2012, a five-man team of assorted miscreants amazed a panel of local celebrity judges with an inspiring presentation, thus earning the privilege to brew its award-winning beer on our Scratch system. Dubbed “Beet It,” this Saison was brewed with 50lbs. of fresh local beets from Strites’ Orchard and an abundance of black peppercorn. Spicy, earthy and tingly on the palate, “Beet It” displays a pleasant pinkish hue, thanks to a special red beet purée added during the fermentation process. Beer aside, “Beet It” also draws inspiration from the immortal lyrics of the King of Pop; a phrase adopted by the team as its mantra, because in the end, “no one wants to be defeated.”

decide to take a trip out to troegs for my birthday , made up my mind this would be the beer i would get as a growler fill. been a while since i had a beet beer. hazy orange in color with wispy lacing . a bit sweetness to this brew, with a light citrus notes. while some seem to taste pepper my palate seemed to miss this flavor note. crisp and easy to drink. i really enjoy trying experimental beers might head back to troegs to try there other scratch brew if it is still availble.

Draft offering at Troegs. The brew pours a hazed golden orange color with a mild sort of reddish hue about it through the thickest part of the body. A white cap rests atop and slowly fades leaving patches of webby lace.
The aroma is quite yeasty with clove spice and a dry fruity aspect reminescent of pear and apple skins. Everything seems on track for this being a solid brew, nothing out of the oridinary or off about it. As it warms up, a mild peppery spice emits.
The flavor is earthy like some saisons are however where this steps off the beaten path is with this huge cracked black peppercorn aspect. It is spicy and warming with that peppery feel mixed with additional clove spice and a bit of herbal hops. A very mild dry grain presence is felt across the backend.
This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. Overall I think it is just an ok offering. A solid idea but I felt like the amount of focus on crushed black pepper was just too bold and distracted from the rest of the brew's attributes.

Tasted at the brewery along with other scratch offerings, all over the course of 90 minutes.

The taste, for me, is very angular. Some of the center is metallic and weirdly vine-sweet. It ends somewhat watery with pepper lingering in the throat.
The body is light-to-medium with buzzy carbonation. Funk in the flavors are accentuated by the yeast-slick chew.
I found this brew tough to drink. It felt sharply out of kilter in contrast to saisons I have had a smoother dance with--but, give it a try, just to say you've had a beet beer!

A - Pours mostly cloudy golden orange with a nice one finger tall white head, dissipating down to next to nothing, leaving spotty trails of lace down part of the glass.
S - Smells of mild fruity saison yeast, light spice, a bit of sugary sweetness, some minerals and a dash of earthy basement must. Nothing really stands out over the rest but it's all there.
T - Starts off with some fruity/spicy saison yeast and a bit of light sugary sweetness quickly giving way to hints of wet basement must, earthy minerals and some light barnyard funk. Much like the nose, all of the flavors you would expect are there but they remain well balanced. Finish is a little sweet with some light funk, lingering on the palate long after the finish.
M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Slick, funky feel from start to finish. I had no problem drinking my half pour in no time flat.
O - I enjoyed this one. It has a nice mild flavor profile, it is well balanced and it is pretty easy to drink. If you get the chance you should definitely give it a try, when else will you get to try a beet saison?
