Pours a clear, deep blood-maroon body capped with just over a finger of lush, pale beige foam; mediocre head retention leaves a spotty few islands of paper-thin cap, a large, fluffy collar, and a limited splotching of webby lacing spread around the walls of the glass.
Aromas burst with brown sugar reduction accompanied by a soft orange backing and distant shreds of ginger, with quieter oak bringing forth a subtle rye spice lingering across the bouquet.
Taste shows rich brown sugar and a touch of brûléed caramel, with bits of grapefruit over the mid-palate easing toward a bourbon back end; a touch of dates marks the finish as barrel residuals linger past the swallow.
Mouthfeel brings a medium body and a subtle fluff of rounded, moderate carbonation, sporting an easy prickle trending slightly sticky past the mid-palate before quickly fading to a balanced drying on the finish.
Burly-sweet malt profile with a candied hop tinge, the soft barrel espouses rich and airy contrasts of brûléed edges against increasingly accentuated fruity subtext in this broodingly potent American Barleywine.
