Since Saint Joseph’s Day on 19 March 1993, Andechs Weissbier Hell has found many new friends. Untreated and bottled in its natural state of yeasty turbidity, this is a top fermented beer for the epicure.
Its light honey colour makes it an immediate eyecatcher. Then there’s the opalescence and fine structure of the yeast turbidity. At the same time, the creamy, fine pored head invites you to get to know this light Weissbier from the Holy Mountain. You’ll need two takes to enjoy the aromas to the full.
First, distinctive fruity aromas like banana and honeydew melon come to the fore, followed by fine cloves. Andechser Weissbier Hell is a very tangy, refreshing treat with the conviction of a full, soft body. It concludes on a finely balanced interplay of light sweet honey and a delicate acidity with undertones of bitter hoppiness that quickly subside into a harmonious aftertaste.
A Weissbier that embodies a slice of the Andechs lifestyle: finely yeasty, tangy, and sparkling, it refreshes and renews the thirst for more

Pours a rich opaque gold color with a thick head that dissipates and leaves some spotty slippery lacing.
Mild toasted malt and nectar fragrance in the nose.
Lightly toasted caramel malt flavor dominates, hints of mild citrus and peppery yeast notes. Surprisingly the typical banana/clove flavors of the style are a little subdued.
Mild balanced hops and a slightly tangy finish. Nicely carbonated and easy drinking.

Weissbier Hell
---Kloster Andechs
Look: 4.5 l 5.0
I split a half liter into two 0.31L weissbier glasses, wow this beer is alive and has a lots energy. Very hazy yellow leaning orange ---as I saw the head developing, I made some adjustments. It was one of the most entertaining pours I've had in long time. I knew there was something special in the bottom and as that that bottom yeast began to haze through I poured one 0.31L glass in a "more neat" condition, and the other one, I proceeded with the remaining heavy load of yeast. This was an excellent way to explore the character of this one!
Smell: 4.5 l 5.0
The smell is awesome! Rich fruity esters emerge with a profile of banana and a familiar sweetness. The aroma of freshly baked bread ---yes. I could detect some additional spice to the profile, reminiscent of nutmeg with the earthiness of coriander.
Taste: 4.25 l 5.0
Rich and satisfying full body with a bread backbone and taste of banana and that spicy coordinated note, leaves an inherent sweetness and deliciousness reminiscent of bubble gum which finishes this well executed delight.
Mouthfeel: 4.25 l 5.0
Smooth and rich, almost creamy, especially the 0.31L with that concentrated yeast from the bottom.
The carbonation adds to the experience with the mouth tingle from it's live energy.
Overall: 4.5 l 5.0
Absolutely incredible, overall It's magical and mystifying, and very very satisfying.

Poured a 500ml bottle dated 12/12/2025 into a weizen glass. A four finger fluffy white head on a cloudy dirty orange. The head diminishes to a layer that sticks around to the end. Sheets of fine lacing.
Banana bread and clove in the nose. The taste follows the nose. Bready, creamy. Very distinct. Nutmeg. Some pepper. A long dry estery finish.
Creamy texture. A medium/light body and good carbonation. Overall a unique and high quality Hefeweizen.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – the beer pours a hazed orange amber color with a huge head of puffy white foam. The head has a fantastic level of retention, fading slowly and leaving a good sum of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – the aroma is intense of a doughy and wheat bready smell mixed with tons of yeast. Along with these aromas comes lots of clove and peppercorn, as well as some banana and orange. There are also notes of lemon and a hint of hay.
Taste – the taste begins with a big wheat flavor mixed with some grainy bread, a good showing of clove, and a bit of orange and banana. These constitute the bulk of the taste remining rather strong throughout. Upfront, the yeast is light, but gets stronger as the taste advances on the tongue. At the same time some light bubblegum and lemon develop, along with a bit of hay. These tastes also get a bit stronger at the end, and with a hint of coriander, one is left with a rather smooth wheaty flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is medium in thickness and chewiness with a moderate carbonation level.
Overall – A rather nice Hefe with a good balance overall.

Flavourful and aromatic like a proper weissbier. Hazy soft yellow gold under a moderate white head. Drinks smooth with the right amount of spice and fruit. Full bodied with a satisfying mouthfeel. Not one we regularly see here in Canada.

Deep gold, nearly orange, cloudy, stubborn head.
Smells wonderful.. banana, cloves, molasses.. and the taste follows. A little boozy, light lemon and melon, strong spice. Quite rich, but the sweetness is kept well in check. Remains very drinkable

500 ml bottle served cold into a weizen glass. LCBO purchase for under $5 CDN. Best before 2025.12.12.
Appearance - Fairly hazy rich golden yellowy color with honey brown highlights. A finger and a half of foamy white head with good staying power. Sparse lacing.
Smell - Banana muffins is a good way to describe this one with a little pinch of clove and the tiniest prickle of lemon. But mostly banana and bread and rich and buttery.
Taste - Rich and bready with a slightly butter aspect. Banana muffins all over again. Low bitterness, with a touch of lingering bubblegum sweetness. Really balanced.
Mouthfeel - As far as hefeweizens go this probably has the closest feel to Weihenstephaner, there's just something there that is magical, Light and bubbly with good depth, flavor that sticks to the tongue and also refreshing.
Overall - Absolute top notch hefeweizen, and ecstatic that I finally get to try it. Picked up another 3 bottles for research purposes, but Andechs really made a contender for the best hefe ever.

500 mL bottle from the LCBO; best before Dec 12 2025 and served slightly chilled.
Pours hazy and effervescent, its golden yellow-hued body crowned with nearly three fingers of elegant, foamy white head. A little over five minutes later, it has largely eroded; a creamy collar and sudsy cap live on, with a respectable smattering of stringy, spotty lace left in its wake. Banana muffins and bready, wheaty malts on the nose, but there's yet more depth to be plumbed as the glass warms. Bubble gum, spicy clove & white pepper are also discernible, with suggestions of pear and citrus peel.
Well, this is just straight-up delicious. Whole grain bread, wheaty malts and lightly caramelized malts come through alongside ripe banana, green banana, sweet apples and banana bread. Spicier on the back end, with clove, white pepper and some grassy, herbal hops preceding a sweet aftertaste of wheat, banana and yeast. Medium in body, with potent carbonation that lends a prickly crispness to this brew's smooth, satisfying mouthfeel. Ridiculously easy to knock back, particularly on a muggy midsummer's night.
Final Grade: 4.46, a brilliant A grade. Andechs Weissbier Hell is fantastic, and all German beer-loving BAs should consider this a must-try. I sampled this side-by-side with my favourite weissbier, Weihenstephaner Hefe, just for comparison's sake: they are both outstanding in their own right, but also quite distinct from one another. Andechs has a sweeter, more robust wheat flavour that leans much more heavily on ripe banana esters - it may be less tailored towards my preferences, but in no way does that lessen its excellence. Nor does it make me any less likely to purchase many more bottles while it remains available - variety is the spice of life, after all.

Pours 1 finger of foam with some lacing around the glass. Foam head dies down a little too quick.
Gold color and smells of banana.
Taste is phenomenal. One of the best wheat beers I've had, and only for around $5 for a 500ml bottle.
Overall if you like wheat beer, this is a must have.
