The beer pours out into a Duvel glass a dark brown, almost black, color with a 1/2" dark tan head that recedes slowly to create a layer of foam on the sides of the glass, a thin foam cover for the liquid and an off-center island of foam. Sipping creates lots of small patches and legs of lacing.
The aromas show some dark roasted malt, dark chocolate and a hint of smoke or char.
The flavors are much as expected from the nose with the roasted malt, the dark chocolate and the touch of smoke or char. Overall there's some nice sweetness that balances the bitterness.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly prickly from the persistent moderate carbonation. The finish begins as the sweetness starts to fade leaving the dark roast and the dark chocolate to follow slowly to end with some dry bitterness in the back of the palate.
This seems a well made beer that I'd be willing to have again, but that said I'll not be going out of my way to find more since there are others I prefer to this one.

Lovely frothy head and scent of sweet chocolate. Thick as mud. Nice dry aftertaste.

Surprised at how rich this is. Nice bourbon and chocolate malt notes. Not a heavy stout; for the flavors it is pretty drinkable. I would seek this out; solid offering from Long Trail.

DATE: November 9, 2018.... OCCASION: a cold, wet night after a good amount of house work ends with a stout... GLASSWARE: Maudite snifter... haven't checked in with Long Trail in a while, and what pours out looks anything but what I remember of their thinner ales and fruity fair--this is cavern black, with a thick, brown, two-fingered head lacing to a strong band of uneven fencing... first whiff is licorice, tootsie roll chocolate, some phenol, paint can, roasted nuts, coffee grinds and some nicotine--as Macduff says to Malcolm, "such welcome and unwelcome things at once, 'tis hard to reconcile"... a milky, textured, active sip, chewy and smooth for a beer at nearly 8% ABV... the tobacco and lactose reconcile in its flavor, with candied chocolate and roasted oats holding off the phenol at arm's distance...this grows bigger, bolder, and more appreciable into its second bottle... this works, but doesn't go beyond that clause--a stout that flirts with an imperial moniker and delivers a reasonable amount of flavor...

Great dark color, incredibly rich looking and foamy. Smell is a little subtle, wish it had more POP to it. Taste is incredible though! Really rich and chocolaty, with a nice bitter aftertaste that smooths right out! I love it. Feel is a little thin though. Overall great stout.
