355 mL can purchased at Maud's Variety; dated Apr 14 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy golden colour, topped with nearly two fingers of soapy, foamy white head that settles off within three to four minutes. It leaves behind an even band of lacing, in addition to a creamy collar and thin cap - looks good to me, and a swirl or two kicks the head back up. Lots of ripe banana on the nose, along with bready, wheaty malts and a fair bit of phenolic spiciness in the form of pepper and clove; smells sweet, like banana candy, with a faint suggestion of lemon peel.
It's not bad - the flavour profile is less 'banana heavy' than the aroma, which is a relief. I'm getting bready, wheaty malts and light banana sweetness, with hints of orchard fruit (e.g. sweet red apples) developing by mid-sip. Moderately spicy on the back end, with clove and white pepper dissipating into a yeasty, spicy aftertaste. Medium in body, with assertive carbonation that remains crisp, prickly and biting right through to the last gulp. Very drinkable, but not especially refreshing.
Final Grade: 3.71, a B grade. Morgenmuffel is an acceptable hefe, but I've had better - too bad I don't have any Weihenstephaner or Schneider on hand at the moment, or I'd crack one of 'em open for comparison purposes. Going by memory instead, GLB's hefe seems sweeter and less nuanced than those upper tier German hefes, but it's still a more than serviceable weiss in its own right. In other words, definitely not a 'miss', but kind of pedestrian if you're acclimated to GLB's usual high standards. I'd try this one again.

Oddly hazed over gold colour. Moderate, very short-lived head that is to a partial ring almost immediately. Lots of carbonation action if you look. Quite spritzy mouthfeel, so not as soft as you might expect a hefe to be. It's actually got some bite, akin to a Caribbean style ginger beer. Fruit and alcohol wrestling in the aroma. Spicy, peppery, wheaty, fruity to taste - interesting enough.

355ml can from Abe Erb....pours a clouded gold with a 3 finger frothy white cap that reduces to a surface lace...aromas are mild, some fruits, sweet malts, bit of clove....flavor is rich in dry dusty wheat malts with a fruity undertone and accents of spice...clean dry peppery finish...rich malty-fruity character, full bodied for a heffeweiss...decent enough effort but nothing outstanding
