Pours pitch black. One finger tan head that dissipated quickly. Moderate lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and burnt toast. Tastes the same. Not overly milky but this had a little sour aftertaste. Light to mod carbonation and rather thin body. Overall ok beer.

Newest WOW stout! This beauty pours a rich coal black with a fantastic
head of medium brown foam that settles to a thick ring, light layer,
and sports some FINE sudsy lacing---best on a coffee stout I have
seen to date. Nose of chocolate, rich coffee, cream, and subtle
char laden malts. Flavors hit the perfect notes with cream laced
lightly bitter coffee and cocoa mixed with a black strap molasses note
that rides through till the end with touches of medium char malt.
Excellent mouth feel; medium to full body, creamy, medium light
carbonation, and a bitter malt finish.

Overall----darn near perfect for the style and rich as the day is long!
WORTHY!

Cheers

on draft. color is black and even the head was dark tan, which dissipated quickly. Aroma was mostly chocolate but the taste certainly was coffee forward. The creme, choc, and coffee blend really well. This is a great beer

12 ounce bottle, stamp on the label says 10/31/16. I'm assuming that's the bottled on date since Short's website says this brew was a November 2016 release. Served in a pint glass, the beer pours dark brown/black with about an inch tan head that stuck around a while. There's also a good amount of lacing. The brew smells like coffee, cream, roasted malt and some chocolate. I think the taste pretty much follows the aroma, it's all coffee, cream, roasted malt and bittersweet chocolate. I think it's more bitter than sweet, and that's fine with me! Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit creamy and coating with a good amount of carbonation. I liked this coffee stout, I'll see if I can find a 6-pack of this one to buy. $2.79 a single bottle.

Pours a black color. 1/2 inch head of a tan color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of strong coffee, sweet malt, slight roasted malt, hint of hops, and slight alcohol. Fits the style of an American Stout. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. There is also a noticeable roasted bitterness. Tastes of strong coffee, sweet malt, lactose, slight roasted malt, hint of hops, and slight alcohol. Overall, good appearance, aroma, body, and blend.

Super dark, dense color. Minimal head. Rich, sweet and roasty malt with some pleasant lactose. Lots of coffee but will balanced. Cooked corn flavor. Dense, sticky feel. Minimal carbonation.

Appearance: a nice pitch black in color after pouring. Very bright neon-like foamy brown head that dissipated quickly to nothing.

Aroma: bitter black coffee. Very roasty and strong like espresso. But there is a sweet cream-like quality that comes to you quickly to give it a mocha flair. Chocolate eventually comes to your senses.

Taste: again with the delicious coffee. After the strong aroma, the coffee hits you hard. The coffee is bitter at first, but the cream follows up midway through. Sweet, creamy and well layered with the bitterness. Bitter chocolate comes around eventually. Then you're left with a strong mocha aftertaste, that just continue to linger around.

Mouthfeel: very appropriate for this beer. Medium bodied with a nice slick mouthfeel.

Overall: coffee is aggressive, maybe almost abrasive and that is a good thing. Far better than many coffee stouts out there. It's bitter like it should be, but then the coffee creamer comes in midway through. Really enjoyed this.

Bottled on 10/31/16. 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours almost black with a small mocha head that fades leaving decent retention and lacing. The aromas have lots of roasted black coffee with some subtle hints of vanilla. Chocolate is there with some mild hints of anise. Some smoke in the mix. Cocoa and roasted malts do their thing. The flavors have nice coffee flavors. Lots of milk chocolate and lots of dark chocolate. The milk sugar is definitely there. More smoke notes, especially in the finish. It's slightly sweet, but nothing cloying or over the top at all. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is on the fuller side of medium-bodied with lower carbonation. It's fluffy, smooth and pretty easy to drink.

This is a nice stout. The coffee and milk sugar come through. Enjoyable stuff.

Easy drinking but with bold espresso roast flavor with a spot of cream. It pours almost jet black, like you expect from a cup of coffee, with an average head. Medium body, as several have noted, and nowhere near a mouth bomb of bitter like some stouts can be. Cocoa comes on late as it acclimates to room temperature.

Oooh, I liked it. I easily see myself drinking this early in the morning. Don't judge, I work many third shifts and like to come home to a good coffee based stout.

This beer was surprisingly good! Didn't know what to expect as Shorts is often hit or miss for me. This beer was one of the best offerings I've had from them. Thanks for the bottle Mike!

12oz bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a 1/2 inch of dark brown head. Some lacing. Nice aroma of espresso, cocoa, and roasted malts with a hint of sweet caramel. The taste is coffee with cream, cocoa nibs and some roasted notes. Some espresso and bitter dark chocolate at the end. Roasted coffee finish. Mouthfeel is slightly heavy and thick. A Founders Breakfast Stout-esk beer. Overall, well made coffee Sout.

Circling back for a review nov 2016. Bottle to snifter. Deep black, tan head. Roasted coffee and nutty deep malts on thi one. Very smooth with milk sugars. ABV very well hidden but it peeks in at the very end. Overall an excellent brew. One to snag when it rotates into season

Bottle, no date:
Pours an inky dark brown to black. A deep tan to brown head does appear, but fades quickly to the edges.

Nose is chocolate coffee, with a hint of cigarette ash; chocolate nibs, cocoa. Warmth does provide a more robust set of smells that are reminiscent of an old coffeehouse, cigarette smoke and coffee (albeit sweetened).

Taste is similar to the dominant scents, chocolate nibs and coffee. There's a very light creamy sweetness, and a little bit of a tangy note near the end. Nice flavors up front, but they seems to fade quickly in the end.

With still a bit of chill, the opening feel is creamy and medium in body. The somewhat quick ending of flavor gives a watery feel for a second, counter to the rest of the taste. There's a light chalkiness that lingers long term.

The opening notes have much promise, but seem a bit of a tease in the long term.

2015 release, poured into a snifter it has a orange-ish khaki head of an inch and a half with a black body. Smell of fresh ground coffee beans, slight lactose sweet sugar, chocolate, roasted malt, and some earth. Taste is a nice creamy smooth coffee, small amount of lactose sweetness, some earth, and a good amount of semi sweet chocolate bitter. It has less roasted malt in the background than I remember from last year, also a little less sweet, but overall less rough and alcohol flavors. Mouth feel and body are full with a creamy drinkable flavor and just enough carbonation. Guess I didn't review last years, but this release is definitely a bit better to me.

Certainly on the sweeter side, though it's by no means too much or cloying. The deep-roasted espresso sit over the black malts with an overriding character of burnt barley and beans. If you like your coffee sweetened and your coffee beans extra black, this is your stout.

Nice coffee stout. Smells like a glass of chocolate milk.

Nice thick mouthfeel. Subtle coffee. Milk chocolate (as you would expect). Sweet but not overly in my opinion. Definitely a desert beer though.

I though this was very solid and would definitely drink it again.

12 oz bottle dated 12/3/14. Pours jet black with a smaller-sized pillowy brown head. Recedes quickly and leaves some good lacing on the glass. Smells mostly of freshly roasted coffee with a hint of dark cocoa. The taste is of dark cocoa, coffee, cream, and some char. Not very bitter or carbonated. No notable hops. Great coating mouthfeel. Overall, while it lacks some complexity, what it does offer is done right; a straightforward coffee stout.

Coffee flavor had a bit of a darker, sat in the pot too long taste. Mouth feel was not too thin but okay. Overall, decent but I'm not sure if I'm assuming s coffee crime stout should taste the same as founder breakfast stout? Maybe I'm insure what exactly a coffee cream stout should taste like. Over all okay.

12oz bottle poured into a Le Coq Imperial Extra Double Stout tulip glass.

The beer pours a deep jet black color, thick and inky, with a finger or so of caramel head, taut and firm that has moderate retention and yields a few spots of soapy lace. The aroma is big on the coffee, roasty, rich and chocolatey, creamy and milky from the lactose, a bit of char and burned malt lingers. The flavors echo the nose, espresso roast, dark rich grain, smooth bittersweet chocolate, lactose sugar but again, there is a long lingering burnt sensation, very roasty and charred. The mouthfeel is nice, coating, creamy, low carbonation that feels good, a bit of richness though the finish is a touch thinner.

Verdict: A nice coffee stout from Short's, perhaps a bit too charred, burnt and roasted for my palate, but certainly enjoyable. A little smoothness and a touch of body at the finish would do this beer wonders.

Poured into a Sam Smith pint glass. No bottling date but I believe they brewed this in November of 2014.

Pours a black coffee with a thin java head that wilts away quickly leaving a little lacing and bubbles from the carbonation. Aroma is spot on! Like a fresh brewed cup of the finest coffee with cream, cocoa, and a touch of vanilla. Taste is smooth and creamy upfront followed by a roasty dark coffee bitterness. No real hops to speak of. As the beer warms the chocolate flavors become more pronounced on the backend. Mouthfeel is medium in body, creamy, and surprisingly carbonated for a stout.

Overall this was an outstanding coffee stout. It made me question whether this was actually a beer or coffee. Great balance and full of coffee flavor. Probably one of the best Short's has to offer.

An excellent coffee beer from Shorts. Beautiful tan brown with a frothy mocha head. The nose is freshly brewed coffee. Body and mouthfeel satisfying without being overly thick or syrupy. Great breakfast time beer or one for when you are flagging during a session.

Thanks to @Bourbon-and-bbq for adding this in a trade.
Pours very dark and slightly thick. Small head.
Smell has a ton of black coffee and some cocoa.
Tasted like a dark roast coffee with the bitterness and slightly burnt flavour, but in a good way.
Mouthfeel was very creamy and silky, the bitterness of the cocoa and coffee lingered just slightly.
A solid beer overall.

12 ounce bottle, dated 12/03/14

Poured into a snifter, the bottle is a pitch black hue with a slowly dissipating, two finger mocha head.

Aroma is huge, wet coffee grounds along with some faint chocolate and roasted malt. Easily the best smelling coffee beer that I have had.

The taste is slightly more focused on the chocolate and roasted malt (compared to the aroma), but the coffee is definitely there. There is a lovely creamy aspect, as well.

Mouthfeel is silky smooth with a charred bitterness on the back end. Carbonation is on the low end.

Overall, the massive coffee aroma is intoxicating and when paired with a creamy chocolate and roasted malt taste, the beer really separates itself. Founders Breakfast Stout sit down, Cup a Joe is the clear Michigan made coffee stout king.

Appearance - Poured into a snifter, the beer was a black with mocha colored bubbles clinging to the sides of the glass.

Smell - The beer has a huge fresh coffee nose. It does not smell like Starbucks so much as a good mom & pop coffee shop.

Taste - Smooth dark roasted coffee begins the initial taste. Malts and burnt sugar are present, rounding out the taste nicely. There is a slightly warming aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Being a crème stout, the beer is quite smooth with little bubbles tickling the tongue on the way down.

Overall - With Spruce Pilsner, this is an annual highlight in the Short catalog
