When I first poured this into a Made in Detroit pint glass, I studied it for several minutes, trying to figure out how to describe the color. I assure you that you haven't seen this one many times, at least not in a beer. My first thought was that it looked a bit like grapefruit juice. It's actually darker, and a bit orange like any other ale, but it does look a bit like pink champagne. Note that I haven't compared the color to any beer. When you see it, you'll know why. This one's a real looker.
Unless you like the bitter fizziness as the head dissipates, the smell usually isn't something that matters much in a beer. But, this has a fruity aroma that makes each sip that much more enjoyable.
And, as amazing as the look and smell are, the taste does live up to it. The juniper berries give it a kiss of a smooth gin, like Blue Sapphire. Then, they give us raspberry, peach, and lemon peel. No, not just things that *taste* like those fruits. The actual fruit is part of the brew.
While this all sounds too sweet, it's not. Everything comes into beautiful balance, with notes like fresh ginger. This is complex, yet still very drinkable. It doesn't have to be the sole attraction: enjoy your food with it.
It's not cheap, but it's definitely worth it.
