A: opaque; very dark brown - almost black in color; 1 finger finely pored medium brown head that receded to a wispy cap; light lacing;
S: distinctly bittersweet chocolate;
T: deeply roasted grain, bourbon, vanilla, and bittersweet chocolate; moderate bitterness on the finish; as it warmed, the whiskey and vanilla faded and the deeply roasted grain came to the forefront;
M: medium to full bodied; moderate carbonation; dry finish;
O: nicely complex;

Medium black pour with a finger of light brown foam. Smells like stouts of old: classic dark malt, chocolate sauce with maple and bourbon. Taste is sweeter than nose revealed, maple and chocolate run away with it before the bourbon and vanillin laden oak capture, brownie and light roasted malt result. Feel is medium light bodied, smooth, surprisingly cool, barrel impact is significant but short lived, a flash in the pan as it were.

Zowzer! That’s a zinger! So much maple that I need pancakes to absorb the flavor! This is definitely a syrupy alcohol that will make your hair stand.

A very tasty, albeit light bourbon barrel offering. No rich luxurious body, no huge roast flavor, but some very nice Maple, bourbon, and barrel characteristics like vanilla and toasted coconut. Pretty great beer all things considered.

Brief Review:
Was super excited to try this super beer. Never made distro, but was lucky to get a local crowler. A little disappointed here, comes across thin, bourbon not too strong. Hurt by the thin base beer (Uncle Steve’s I think?). But overall not too bad.
Recommendation: Tough to find, but still worth trying if you’re a big Short’s fan.

DATE: January 28, 2021... OCCASION: the leadoff hitter for this year's Extreme Beer Fest--with Jerry, the gift's bestower, no less! GLASSWARE: EBF plastic cup... pours a jet black body with dark brown head, a slight smear that may suggest strength... aroma includes light maple, heat, roasted bread malts, coffee--which someone noted in the forum, despite the brewer stating there isn't any in this... medium-bodied, lingering finish, effervescent and engaging...a bit punchy even... a sweet finish, with the maple subdued and the malts pushed forward.... this is indeed a delicious start to the night, solid in every phase, strong in its weight, and highly drinkable (though I believe the brewer estimated the ABV% at 7.9, not 9.7)...

Pours black with a dense tan head. Beautiful beer. The barrel jumps in feet first on the nose, and the maple is a nice complement to the bourbon and chocolate notes.
The taste is led by the barrel, and the maple is on point, with the chocolate notes providing some depth, but this leans more toward the imperial porter side of the ledger than a BA stout.
It is still delicious, and I’m glad it was part of the EBF party.

Super Delicious Stout, Beer Fest Edition from Short’s Brew. Received on 20/1/21 for the Extreme Beer Fest – Cyberspace (2021) from Half-Time, Poughkeepsie, NY. $ 109.99 (Including tax and shipping). This is a 12 oz bottle ($ 0.702/oz). Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 11/2/21. (Note: I use DD/MM/YY protocol.)
On neck of bottle in black ink “PKG 12/11/20”. Served at 54.6 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 57.7 degrees.
Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Ruby Brown (SRM 24), murky and nearly opaque.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When rear-lite, still opaque but just a hint of ruby at the extreme edge.
Head – Average (Maximum four cm, aggressive center pour), fawn, high density, short retention, diminishing to a three to four mm crown, and a thin partial cap.
Lacing – Fair. Partial band of nearly microscopic bubbles.
Aroma – 4. – Heavy bourbon and some fleeting maple, no hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 3.5 – Odd. Very weak bourbon and about as much roasted malt as an AAL. No hops, no yeast, no maple. Slightly sweet. No alcohol (7.5 % ABV, according to BA) flavor or aroma, but a transitory alcohol warming appears then dies after each swallow.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, approaching creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 Best beer I’ve ever had from Short’s – Not super, not delicious, and more of a porter than a stout.
