A lager brewed with coffee using a recipe built by Kurt Vonnegut’s grandfather who was a brewer. The first batch of this beer was brewed in 1996 and again in 2007 as a tribute to Kurt’s passing.

Pours golden brown with an off white head that doesn't stick around for too long. Aroma offers biscuit and caramelt, chocolate tones, light roasted coffee, and yager least. Flavor follows suit. Quite balanced and it does a great job of showing itself to be a vienna lager with coffee, coffee does not overpower at all. A medium bodied mouthfeel, probably a touch heavier than preferred. Overall, I quite enjoyed this one. Those looking for a bold coffee beer are sure to be disappointed as this one is balanced and allows the coffee to be a supplemental flavor to the beer and not the primary. I think it works quite well.

I tried this beer off the tapper at the brewery as part of a four sample flight. It looked, tasted, and smelled like a typical middle of the road american coffee lager. There was a nice coffee bite. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall, it is a decent beer.

Pint in a shaker at the brewpub.

Pours clear, nutty amber, smallish wispy head, substantial ring sustained by noticeable carbonation. Smell is nice -- nutty and very toasty bread. Doesn't quite get smokey, but leans in that direction.

Taste is more in the nutty side, but heavily toasted nuts -- and leaning even harder toward smokey. Moderate maple/molasses sweetness.

Mouthfeel is a little still, a little heavy, and approaching chewy. Overall, good and interesting.

12 oz can served cold into a shaker pint glass.

Kurt's Mile Hight Malt is a clear copper color with thin white head.

Aroma is rich in vanilla with hints of coffee and malt.

Flavor is sweet up front with a little bit of hop bitterness. The coffee flavor aspect is well judged and not over powered.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and nicely carbonated. Balanced and drinkable with just the right amount of coffee.

Overall an enjoyable beer and perfect for the cool autumn nights.

12 oz can. Pours clear copper orange with a big bubbly white head that goes to a thin film and leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is sweet biscuity caramel and toffee malts with some chocolate and coffee. Smells like dessert.

The flavor is nutty biscuit malts with some sweet roast coffee. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, a nice coffee beer. The sweet coffee goes well with the nutty caramel malts. Reminds me of NBB Giddy Up.

this storied recipe is back for wynkoop, their latest cans to come out, a vienna lager with local coffee. i love the idea, but the execution of the beer isnt as impressive. light shiny copper in color, nice and clear, with a limited amount of off white head that settles quickly. the nose is subtle coffee, sweet and fruity really, gummy almost, with the malty aromas of a true vienna lager behind that. i like that it stays a vienna lager first, fuller bodied and a little sweeter, but still with that quicker lager yeast finish. that part is the greatest success of this otherwise middling brew. i think the coffee could stand to be more prominent too though, especially in the finish, and probably the medium body is a bit much even for this type of lager. its not bad by any stretch, and is sure to please some folks quite well, but for me there was just a missing element and a dichotomy unbridged between the base beer and the coffee.

Pretty interesting item. According to the menu it was brewed in honor of author Kurt Vonnegut. It's being billed as an Export lager brewed with coffee. Since there are so few lagers being brewed with unusual ingredients, this is already a winner in my eyes.
Arrives an unusual shade of brown. Looks like a dunkel-weizen, only it's clearly filtered. It just has that tan/light brown color. It's got a little foam head on the top, but nothing huge.
Smell is sweet and chocolaty, but it has that distinct lager grain bill and clean yeast smell.
Taste is sweet and I'd say it leans more in the chocolate flavor direction than coffee. The coffee is really only coming through in the finish. It might be the name subconsciously affecting me, but the flavor of malted milk balls is there. It's not annoyingly sweet like you might think. I think it's just the natural alcohol and malt of the export blending with the coffee.
It's a nice combination of thickness (to retain all that malt flavor) and liquid to go down easy.
I can't say I've had much like this. Reminds me a little of a dunkel lager, but it's sweeter and the hops are toned down. It's got some of the chocolate profile from a dunkel-weiss (minus the banana notes) but it's got that lager clean finish.
I like it!

I asked if this was a "malt bomb" and the bartender said, "almost".
Hazy dark golden body provided a nice foundation for the white head, which blossomed up to about 2 fingers. Quick swirl of the glass later on reproduced a repsectable head, good lacing.
Aroma of mocha coffee is rich. Malt is sweet and sticky. Never smelled this much coffee in a lager.
Taste is a soft malt nose, strong coffee middle and a sticky finish. Slight citrus keep the malt from running away in this brew. As the glass was drained, the coffee turned into more of an earthy malt and grain taste, sapping the pleasure a bit for me. I'm a hop head, so I was lenient in the drinkability rating: i actually gave the rest of the beer to a friend, and moved on to the Monkey Fist.
