This saison was brewed in collaboration with our beloved friends from Tired Hands Brewing Company. We used a base of Pilsner malt, Crystal 30, Teff, Almonds, and Couscous and hopped it exclusively with Hallertau and Tettnang hops. Additions of saffron and lemon bring aromas of Jolly Pumpkin funk, spicy oak and lemon in the nose. Flavors of light oak funk and lemon pair well with the slight spiciness and noble hop profile.

So how did we come up with the name? Well…When it came time to name this beer Jean wanted to call it Alien Baphomet, which was too scary for us. Instead, we chose Bath-o-mat & Washeteria, which is close enough and possibly equally scary! Inspired by a stay across the street from our dear friend Polly’s Washeteria, Prytania Washateria, located in the hauntingly beautiful city of New Orleans.

Crowler from Bailey's

A mildly hazy orange with a dense, off-white head with excellent retention and lacing, this looks solid. The nose is bright and snappy, a blend of crisp grain, lemon peel, mild floral notes and a fresh, young Brett character. Earth, clove and a little plastic are present. A touch of vanilla is present as well. The base saison yeast is spicy and deep, with a blend of white pepper, clove and honey. Quite excellent. The palate opens tart with a nice blend of barrel tannins, lemon peel and funky Brett. Mild oak and vanilla are present, with a moderate straw and mild dough flavor present. Delicate saffron notes, along with some melon are present. Mildly oily with lemon on the mid-palate, before a moderately funky finish with lingering clove, earth and mild lactic tartness. Medium-light in body and moderately carbonated, this beer is quite excellent.

an absolutely brilliant saison here, brewed in collaboration with tired hands, who has these styles pretty well dialed themselves. this has lemon and saffron in it, but also almonds and couscous, sounds like a bunch of weird and disparate ingredients, but the final product is cohesive and amazing. i think the almonds and couscous are unique in the mash, along with an african grass i had to google called teff, they work well with the pilsener malt i think, allowing the beer to remain light in color and grain weight, but proving some really interesting earthy nuance that would be missing now if it were gone. its not way out there, not as weird as it sounds, but its a needed element. the lemons are kind of limey to me, especially along with the noble hops in the flavor, some spice and some rather intense summery citrus, a little bite too, makes this refreshing with all the carbonation. the saffron is cool, i taste it way more than i thought i would, its a hard thing to get to come through like this, so pure and still delicate, but they have done it. light body made even lighter by all the bubbles, cool rustic yeast profile that i always love in jolly pumpkin beers, and the added tartness of the lemons brings it out even more. refreshing and delicious, the hits just keep coming from these guys!

Hazy bright yellow with tons of droopy lace left by a thin ring.

Smell is toasted seed, lemongrass, and orange zest.

Taste is nicely tart lemon with semi-bitter grapefruit rind as well as grass and coriander

The soft light body has a tingly carbonation and a semi-dry finish.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 2/15/2018. Pours slightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky white head with awesome retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Dense soapy lacing clings on the glass. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big lightly tart lemons, peels, lime, saffron, almond, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white wine, peppercorn, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, toasted oak, wheat, cracker, and white bread; with lighter notes of leathery/musty funk, white vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity/funky/spicy/light acidic yeast, fruit, spices, earthy hops, and moderate pale malt/grain notes; with great strength. Taste of big lightly tart lemons, peels, lime, saffron, almond, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white wine, peppercorn, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, toasted oak, wheat, cracker, and white bread; with lighter notes of leathery/musty funk, white vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness. Light-moderate peppery yeast/oak tannin spiciness, herbal/floral/grassy bitterness; light fruit tang, and lactic tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart lemons, peels, lime, saffron, almond, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white wine, peppercorn, hay, straw, herbal, floral, grass, toasted oak, wheat, cracker, white bread, light funk/vinegar, and yeast/oak earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy/light acidic yeast, fruit, spices, earthy hops, and moderate pale malt/grain flavors; with a great malt, bitter, spicy, and tartness balance; with zero puckering/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitter/spiciness. Medium-high carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately grainy/sticky/tannic, fairly crisp, and lightly acidic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 6.4%. Overall this is an awesome wild saison. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity/funky/spicy/light acidic yeast, fruit, spices, earthy hops, and moderate pale malt/grain flavors; very smooth, crisp, and easy to drink; with the modestly bitter/spicy/tannic/drying finish. Classic JP house funk, great fruit/spice/noble hop balance, oak presence, and solid pale malt backbone. They used Teff Seeds and Couscous, but it still tasted like most normal grains on profile. A really enjoyable offering, and spot on style example as expected.
