Enjoyed on tap at Jolly Pumpkin's Ann Arbor location. JP really loves hibiscus, as I believe this'll be the third beer of the night I've had with hibiscus in it. It comes out with a vivid amber color, outlined in lighter, golden edges. The clarity is decent, though not crystal clear, and the brew is topped with a soapy, quickly receding, sparse white head.
Floral, leafy, and ever-so-slightly earthy hops dominate the aroma, and they surprisingly take on more of a soft and velvety role, as opposed to a straight-up bitter and abrasive approach. Some light citrus spritz is noticeable towards the end as well. Funny enough, out of the three hibiscus-containing beverages sampled on this day, the one with "hibiscus" in its name is the one in which it went mostly under the radar... Kind of strange. Smells good, otherwise, but perhaps it's a bit one-dimensional, especially once you get used to the hops.
The taste follows through again with a floral, leafy, and rose petal-like array of hops that seemingly add more to the flavor and texture profile than they do actual bitterness (which is definitely not a bad thing). Bitterness is there, of course, but we're talking pale ale levels of bitterness, AT BEST, so calling this an IPA is almost a stretch. It tastes like a garden flower patch with just a light kiss of bitterness on the tail-end.
The only other discernible feature is the citrus zest that kind of comes and goes as it pleases. It's actually faintly tart at times, though there are some sips where I don't get much of it at all. Mildly sweet, bready malts crowd the aftertaste once the hop flavors fade... Still not getting much hibiscus in this, if any - it seems more buried under the floral essence of the hops, if anything. Medium-light bodied with higher than average carbonation.
Not a bad brew at all, just not quite what I was expecting and probably not something I'd get very often. Doesn't have the "punch" that you look for in an IPA - it may even be a touch underpowered for an APA. The floral flavors were definitely nice, though, but I wish the hibiscus was a bit stronger since, you know, it's part of the moniker and all. Decent enough to be enjoyable without complaint, but nothing too special.
