Seriously!

I wasn't happy with Abnormal, Alesmith, Beachwood Brewing, Bottle Logic, Bruery, Dionysus, Firestone, Highland Park, Modern Times, Smog City, Topa Topa, Tustin Brewing Co producing decent to excellent stouts, thankfully someone finally heeded the call.

 

To be absolutely fair, the only Beachwood BBA stout I've liked was....10? the new Barrel Aged Mocha Machine is a porter, but it's tasting mighty fine.

 

Its always been a porter, but Tovarish & System of a Stout are stouts. I would also argue that Mocha Machine (and BAMM) rides the line of porter and stout pretty close.

 

Onyx was a great imperial Stout I wish they would bring back

For all intents and purposes, there is no style differences between the modern-day porter and stout. Some people say that porters have a thinner body, but I have had thin stouts and thick porters. I personally consider them one and the same.

How a brewer markets their beer will impact how a consumer judges it. If a brewer puts "stout" on the bottle and it is thin, it would most likely count against the beer in many judgments. If that brewer call it a "porter" and its on the thin side, it'd be stylistically appropriate and I don't think people would judge it the same.

 

Everytime I see a list like this I just assume that the person hasn't had what is considered an excellent stout nowadays. You really going to include Bruery stouts in a list in 2018?

There's a reason it says *decent* to excellent, lately yes it's pretty hard to be a fan. Every so often there's flashes of brilliance but, I find myself needing to age a lot of their wares. Also the original post just said SoCal.

I would argue that if the Bruery were located in another part of the globe with a fraction of their production they'd have a lot more hype.

 

FWIW, I do agree that there are good stouts in CA. I think the original poster probably should have used the term world class or something instead.

 

There are world class stouts from a lot of those breweries listed though...

Also, I refuse to believe the floatie coconut rock candy stout from a brewery's first release is higher than all of the breweries listed.

 

From Bottle Logic and Modern Times, sure.
