After 1600 beers this one ranks near the top. Try 24. We bought 4 pack at Park Slope Coop.
    a) Slashes continents of lace around a top head that lasts on top of a hazed apricot body.
    s) Ripe oversized hop aromas. Its an orchestra.
    t) Starts sweet on a honeyed maltiness back, then rises into a blaring, yet controlled, movement of fruity, floral and bitter hops. Juicy fruitbowl all tempered by earthy bitterness. Not dank, all bright.
    f) Super creamy. Medium bodied finishing clean, bitter, complex, with pepper and wine like phenols. Play with it on your tongue like a pinot noir, there's that much fruit and flavor packed into the recipe.
    o) I want to blind test this to every 4.2 or higher DIPA I love.

Dales is my original craft darling so I find most of what Oskar does compelling, (except Coconut) BUT no exception here.
Compares well with the solid Prickly Pear sour from Carton: http://cartonbrewing.com/beers/dune-fruit/, and much better than most vegetal beers, including this recent rosé ROSALIE from star brewer Firestone: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2210/393547/?ba=Act25#review
    a) Rose tinged copper with all the pretty colors and lace of Dales. Extra sparkly fine bubbles.
    s) Aroma borders between sour and pale ale - a great place to hang out as it turns out, they find a gap and fill it well.
Pear wins as the essence that keeps you sniffing.
    t) Love this, if flawed, it's too sweet for more than one! Offers tangy fruit berries: cranberry, raspberry, grape. Some green cider for the sweet-sour balance. Would be great with chinese/asian food or sushi. Light hops, finishes very wine like. This is a food beer for sure.
    f) If you want prickly, spritzy, almost spritzer like this is for you. Light good / great! first beer of the evening or aperitif.
    o) Refreshing but close enough a masculine pale that it works. Floral masculine!

Can do no wrong with this sour, which must be tasted against all sours. Revelation and perfect fit to the name and can dressing, Go BROOKLYN!
    a) Looks right, and as with all sours, the head fades fast and doesnt lace, but on point.
pale straw color, translucent haze, wispy white head.
    s) grapefruit fresh citrus, flakey puff pastry and grassy earth.
    t) Moves from faint to fabulous. "You taste fabulous". Reminds me of the sweet smelling bathing suit model blondes in i used to date in LA. *(well I dated one, Tina)
    f) Acidity imparts a lifting, puckering, light-aired feel - per bel air.
    o) what to drink at the beverly hilton.
As Beerchitect wrote "wonderful beer that begs for tangy young goat cheese, a loaf of sourdough and perhaps wine braised mussels."

AS THICKLY HAZY, as they come without being too much like fruit juice.
    a) Creates a creamy, sticky bone colored head that scrapes lace, over the dark apricot haze bomb body.
    s) Dank, solid, pine, medicine cabinet more than fruit.
    t) Has the medicinal backbone, along with pine and hops on top of chewy breadiness.
    f) Feel is chewy, asprin, powdery.

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Looking like a busier thread than usual today. Made a very large new beer haul this weekend, will be busy for a while. Still plan on hitting up more local breweries for growler fills in the coming weeks. Need to send out the NBS BIF box, and I have yet to pack it up.

    Beer:

Delicious German pils, super fresh bottling. Fantastic fluffy head retention/thick foamy lacing. Crystal clarity. Aromas and flavors of cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit malts; and herbal, woody, floral, grassy, peppery noble hops. A bit of fruity/skunky aromas, but not overwhelming. Light-moderate herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation, light-medium body, and moderately crisp/clean finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malts and sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Slight lingering resins. Light-moderate increasing bitter dryness; no hop astringency. Refreshingly smooth, flavorful/not watery for 4.8%. Perfectly clean lager flavors, no fruity/yeasty notes. Perfectly balanced between clean pils malts and earthy noble hops. Minimal residual sweetness with crisp dryness. Spot on stuff, perfect example of the style. 3.91

I made it quite clear in my last post why I was becoming tired of participating in the forums, although I still lurk in several threads, including the weekly NBS threads. Today I have something I felt worthy of sharing - a 'new-to-me' style named Roggenbier. Thanks to @MonDak_Joe1953 for the opportunity.

Roggenbier, as characterized by Beer Advocate:

"Roggenbier is akin to a Dunkelweizen made with rye rather than wheat, but with a greater body and light finishing hops. Expect a very pronounced spiciness and sour-like rye character, malty flavor, and a clean hop character. Often unfiltered and bottle-conditioned, Roggenbiers tend to be rather turbid and foamy."

    Waldmann Brewery & Wurstery's Roggenbier.

Pours a foggy and hazy deep-ruby with two fingers of khaki foam after a 10oz pour straight into the glass. Foam is dense, retaining well. Aroma is rye, barley, nutty, earthy, caramely malts with hints of herbal, spicy, and medicinal hops. Yeast esters alongside dark fruits add a little additional zest and sweetness, respectively. Flavor profile is smooth and sweet, with nutty, earthy, caramely, toasty, bready malts forming the bulk of the taste. A little yeast ester at the back adds a touch of zest, while rye comes on a little stronger, further enhancing the spiciness just a touch. Caramel and stone fruits add just a little sweetness in the center. Dynamics between sweet and zest are smooth and flowing. Mouth feel starts out thin and nearing-still, and then develops into a medium thickness with a lightly fuzzy, prickly effervescence on the tip of the tongue and fades away with that same quality. Overall, rye and spicy notes are mild, but contrast in such a way to create an intriguing and enjoyable dynamic.

    Score: 4.25 | 4 | 4.25 | 4.25 | 4.25 | BA Score: 4.19 | rDev: N/A (not enough reviews/ratings)

    Personal notes:
Based on the characteristics listed by Beer Advocate, this beer nails the style. As it's the only version of this style I've had, I'll leave the rating here for now.

L: Vibrant hazy yellow in color, completely opaque. About a finger of a stark white cap that dissipated quickly. Moderate lacing left on the glass.
S: Fantastic. Loads of stonefruit with bright citrus notes. Mild grassy presence as well.
T: Darn good. Citrus is dominant with hints of apricot and mango on the finish. Mild hop bite at the end that cascades into a fruity sweetness in the aftertaste.
F: Medium in body, light in weight. Moderate carbonation with appropriate fizz.
O: This is outstanding. At 6.7 abv, very approachable. I would drink again

Good afternoon NBS and thanks @cjgiant for the start, congrats to your team in their quest.
We are back home from our 10th Stoutfest at Armsby Abbey, amazing food and stout list, with Hill Farmstead Poetica #2 as the palate cleanser. Amazing
Home now and enjoying this collab from Dupont and Allagash, love the tension between the normal Dupont prickly spicy, and the restraint of Allagash. Wonderful effort, delivers the goods.

Poured from an undated 11.2 oz bottle into the test glass
A - Honey color, a touch of haze, steady carbonation feeds a rocky eggshell colored cap.
S - That dusty Dupont nose, with a very nice orange peel thread added, to compliment the usual white pepper and spice nose we are all used to
T - Follows the nose in lock step, add a very soft tropical element, with some Guava, and a nod towards green tea
M - Less prickly than the usual Dupont experience, soft on the palate a bit more round than usual. Start is semi sweet and the linger is spicy and wonderful.
O - A wonderful Saison with all the elements of classic Dupont and the gentle touch of Allagash, well worth seeking out

This one is fairly straightforward but well executed. I don't have much to expound upon beyond the review, but the Cliff's Notes version is this: 5.5% ABV stout, traditional and very tasty. Lots of roasty tones, from bitter chocolate to coffee. The full review, naturally, follows:

Xocoveza Charred, a BBA Milk Stout brewed with cocoa nibs, coffee, lactose, cinnamon, nutmeg and Pasilla chillies, aged for 3 months in American Oak Kentucky Bourbon Barrels by American Brewer Stone (10% ABV).

Pours a pitch black coloration with a medium, fluffy, mocha-colored head that dissipates quickly. Smells of roasted, caramel malt, chocolate and a musty, earthy oak presence, as well as lighter notes of vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and bourbon.

Taste follows the nose, being dominated by roasted, caramel malt and dark, bitter chocolate, as well as an earthy/musty oak presence and lighter notes of coffee, bourbon and spice, with vanilla most distinct, much lighter notes of cinnamon and just a hint of nutmeg and chili, which intensifies in the aftertaste. Finishes with a light/medium bitterness and some chocolate and spice lingering in the aftertaste, with some more chili coming through in particluar. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and low carbonation.

I think that 3-4 years did not treat this beer kindly. The coffee has faded to almost nothing and the spices seem rather muted compared to fresh Xocoveza as well. It does have a lovely bourbon note and oak presence to make up for that, of course, but the bourbon could actually be richer, although it does accentuate the vanilla notes. At least the lactose feels much muted as well, which is a good thing in my book, and the chili seems to stand out a little more in the aftertaste.

Comparing this to fresh Xocoveza, I actually find it hard to pin down which I like more. Fresh Xocoveza definitely has more coffee, cinnamon and nutmeg going for it, while this feels more roasted/earthy and heavier on the bitter chocolate and vanilla, with some additional bourbon notes and more muted lactose. Who am I kidding, I definitely like this better, however, I have a strong suspicion that this was much better fresh.

As I recall, you need to know the secret handshake to get the free four-pack, but it's been a while since I've been there. Also, as I recall, the Natural History Museum in London had a small, non-craft, beer selection as well, but Mrs. Lizard dragged me out before I'd gotten clear through it.

Ok, spent the afternoon catching up with some old friends and fellow UVa alumni. We're all amazed we've eked through these tournament games and are looking forward to tomorrow's final. We also caught up on our lives and revisited old stories of our youth.

Back home now, and I have a new dark lager coming out of the northeast, from Kent Falls Brewing called Substrate. I recently had a dark Czech lager from Commonwealth Brewing in Virginia and quite liked it. I did share a can of Substrate with a few people during last night's game, but there was no thought of an official review at that time. I will correct that comparing these two dark lagers and see which I prefer more.

Both of these brews pour as a dark brown stream into the glass and build up a finger and a half of large bubbled head. The Substrate head is a half a shade darker, but both fall to thin islands and medium rings. The Kent Falls brew also has a darker body (and maybe even a little haze - though it's really hard to tell), as I can see shimmers of light through the Cimmerean with more beer left in the glass.

Substrate has a slightly fudgy aspect to the dark malts, with a bit of slightly burnt wood and a light roast coffee with a slight metallic note to it. This is a little more complex than the more straightforward dark bread and light char from Cimmerean.

A somewhat fuller feel than I expected, though it doesn't get to a medium body. There is a nice dichotomy of somewhat soft/creamy edges with a barrage of carbonation on the front of my tongue. A little more lively and a bit thicker than the Cimmerean.

Chocolate malt opening is backed by some soft dark bread and just a flicker of char. There's an air of a reedy grass or woodsy hops in play, but whatever it is pairs so well with the more obvious malt notes, it's not clear exactly what they are bringing on their own. The Cimmerean flavor is more bread-like in comparison.

These beers are quite similar, but have their small differences that might only be obvious via this side-by-side. I like the lighter feel and bready lean of the Cimmerean beer a little bit more than the bolder roasted malt profile of Substrate, but I'd order a glass either if I were in the mood for a lighter-feeling dark beer.

NBS #2, also from @woemad. Dirt Church, a "Northeast IPA" brewed by Bitter Root Brewing in Hamilton, Montana. This is my first Montana-brewed beer and I was thrilled to receive it. My number of missing states is dwindling. This has a rather unusual muddy brown-orange color with an attractive fluffy, bright white head and creamy lacing. The smell is very tropical. While fruity, the taste isn't quite as fruity as the nose. It also has a nice base of wheat cracker. The bill of Simcoe, Mosaic, Amarillo and Citra hops is flavorful but not overly bitter. It's a truly sessionable IPA at 5.2% ABV. I enjoyed my first beer from Big Sky Country. Thanks, Fred!

Straight from the can, so no appearance and not much aroma. For having centennial hops I was hoping for some floral notes, but really none of that. Getting some mild bitter grapefruit and melon. The perfect mouth feel for a 7% IPA. A nice IPA, but regular Stone IPA is cheaper and just as good or better.

Yet another first review. Incredible Berliner. Fantastic rocky head retention/thick foamy lacing. Dark ruby red/pink/purple color. Aromas and flavors of huge juicy/tart/tangy marionberry, blackberry, raspberry, fruit skin/seed, lemon, lime, orange, peach, plum, pear, melon, red/green apple, currant, red grape/wine, hay, straw, and grass; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough, lightly toasted biscuit malt balance; light peppercorn, lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, fruit tang, and light spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body. Balanced creamy/silky/grainy wheat, lactic acid, and fruit tang/tannins in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy dryness; zero puckering. Refreshingly smooth, not overly lactic, flavorful/not watery for 4.5%. Perfectly balanced between super jammy berries, Lacto complexity, and pale/wheat malts against acidity. Wonderful stuff, I am getting a 4 pack. Amazing style example. 4.28
