I'm in agreement with you. I'm just not into the "White IPA" thing.

    Hey, Rod!
Heard you on the radio the other day talking Coug basketball! Are you going to spearhead a donation drive to get the players their own new swanky digs?
I've been curious about Double Mountain lately, but I've been holding off because I'd had one of their beers on tap and frankly wasn't too impressed.

Went to see Captain America - Winter Solider earlier this weekend which was a fantastic movie. Home tonight and watching the first one on TV. There is a bit of rain moving into the area, but I got a few steaks grilled before it started...

I managed to get one lone bottle of KBS in a trade this week, so I decided to give it a go for NBS. I did have a small sample of the 2013 version at EBF this year, and remember being a little underwhelmed. Perhaps it was the mix of other big stouts I had that night, or just an off keg. It was good mind you, but nothing special.

Tonight I got to enjoy the 2014 version and it was a completely different experience. This is truly a really great beer. I think I still prefer BCBCS a bit more, but will seek this one out whenever I can.

Looking forward to tonight's Game of Thrones season opener.

Picked up two of the Ommegang Fire and Blood bottles.
Nerd alert: AFAIK, the dragon on the left bottle is named Rhaegal, after Daenerys deceased older brother, Rhaegar, and the one on the right is Drogon, named after the deceased Khal Drogo. Not pictured is the bottle featuring Viserion, named after her brother, Vicerys, recently deceased.

Finished off my glass of Another One and had some lunch...

So now its time for the Fire and Blood...
Didn't see any new glassware for the season, but I have the glass from last season's Take the Black.

Thought the beer was good, but not rave-worthy. Gets novelty/theme points, of course, and as a fan of the series, there's no reason not to indulge, eh? Good times.

    Check this out!

    Pssst! @Shroud0fdoom

Here's to new beers - cheers!

    New black IPA Sunday!

Greetings from Rhode Island, where I've spent a relaxing long weekend home with some family. Tried some great new beers, the latest of which is this from Maine:

A solid beer, but yes, the price gets me. Great beer, but I don't think I would dish out $8 for another 500 ml bottle. Cheers all!

New Beer(what?!?it came from Texas?) Sunday
Greetings All. The weather here is, well...it's sunny, almost always is. But some beautiful clouds and refreshing breezes. Wind hikes are singing, rib eyes are quietly screaming on the grill.
Had this great offering from Community outta Texas:
Mosaic IPA. I don't know if it's mostly Mosaic hops, but wow. I really like this one. Full, almost bready with a nice grassy hint. Seek it out.

New Rye / American Pale Ale Sunday

    Greetings NBS,

Southern CT offered vast, bright sunny skies with mild temps and general all around pleasantness. A great day for some outdoor chores and time with the fam around the neighborhood.

I spent Friday with some friends in some of the finer beer bars in South Philly. Of note I was extremely fortunate to try Hel & Verdomenis and Founders Smoked Porter both on tap as well as an IPA from the Humidor Series of Cigar City (featured cedar in the beer, absolutely fantastic). Some great beers were sampled.

On to a new beer for Sunday - I have been watching in anticipation as others have tried Smitten Rye from Bell's so I finally found one and - eh, it was fine, but not much more:

I was about to head off to bed after a week-end of children dominating my house culminating with a ruckus 6 year old princess tea party complete with 10 screaming girls.

I felt restless, like my week-end wasn't complete. I walked into my garage fridge searching for some water before bed when it called to me, softly at first, but then louder and louder. There I saw it a bomber somewhat forlorn in the back of the man fridge.

Well I grabbed it, gave it an aggressive pour and got a pearly layer of foam. The smell was bitter, but then extremely malty. I wet my lips in excitement. I grabbed the glass, looking much like the dude on the bottle as I took the beer to my lips. Boom. A huge hit of malt and hops gripped me and rushed my brain with caramel signals. I knew this was right. I had completed my destiny and a New Beer Sunday was upon me.

    One pour no fuss.

With 2 1/2 hours to spare.

    Happy new Black IPA Sunday!

So today was a lot of driving, then enjoying the nice warm spring time weather. Up for today is Sierra Nevada Blindfold Black IPA. Figured this would be a good choice from the IPA pack to start with (well, I've already hit the Torpedo, but I've had that before). Pretty good, not something super outstanding, but it is a very solid choice from them that I would gladly drink again. Glad there are only three of each in the pack though. Hope you all have had a wonderful NBS!

    Cheers!

    Greeting and salutations NBS'ers,
Been a hell of a weekend thus far and uncle joe is movin kinda slow at the junction. anyone deciphering those last few words will be dating themselves. Went to a great bottle share last night, then met up with some buds for a beer brunch and had some more malted goodness, then came home and fired up the grill for the first time this year for a delectable dinner to close out what was a mostly sunny 58 degree day. So with that said we are going a little on the light side tonight with New Glarus Coffee stout weighing in at a middlin 4.8% abv.

Pour is espresso black with a two finger black head that leaves behind some lace. Aromas of coffe, chocalte malt and a little roast. Taste is light coffee, hint of chocate, roasted malt with a mild bitter finish. Decent carbonation, medium body and a little oily. A nice light stout that has some porter like characteristics and worth trying again. reminds me of another light coffee stout that I enjoy and that is Fuel Cafe from Lakefront brewery also from Wisconsin.

Hope everyone has a good week and will be back next sunday,
    Cheers

    Howdy NBSers!

So earlier in the week, I pulled the trigger on the Samuel Adams Hop-ology pack. The six brews that are included are Tasman Red IPA, Whitewater IPA, Double Agent IPL, Grumpy Monk Belgian IPA, Roggen Wolf Rye IPA, and Third Voyage Double IPA. Of the six, I've had the first four, so I would like to present to you my take on the latter two beers that are included in the pack. I'm going to start with the Roggen Wolf:

Pours a clear amber color with a finger length of white head and a good amount of visible carbonation. There is a light amount of lacing left behind on the glass. I could smell that piney note when I was pouring the beer, but sticking my nose in the glass also revealed orange peel, caramel, biscuits, lemon pine sol and a touch of resin. While the taste starts off with a decent amount of sweetness, the taste brings about some of that rye that was promised, which adds to the big amount of bitterness that is already there. There is a strong mix of bread and citrus in the aftertaste, and it lingers for a while. This brew is just above a session brew as far as the mouthfeel is concerned, and the carbonation level is just about the norm for what I've experienced.

Overall, I find this to be a damn tasty brew! The rye doesn't shine through as much as I expected, but I can live with that. Actually, I respect the direction that was taken with this brew much more than a few commercial brews that took the rye too far in an offensive direction in my opinion (not naming names). If you like your IPAs with that piney flavor and aroma, this should definitely be on your radar!

I think it's time to my favorite Pink Floyd song... in the post-Roger Waters era:

I'll be back shortly with my take on the Third Voyage Double IPA.

    New Barleywine Sunday!

Ran down to Monmouth county this weekend to grab a few growlers from our best brewer Kane and grabbed their semi new release barleywine, Vengeful Heart.

Extremely hoppy, very americanized barleywine. Tasty and ipa-like.

    Cheers!

Time for new brew number two, which is Sam Adams Third Voyage Double IPA. Here's what I thought of it:

Pours a deep, clear amber with a foamy finger and a half of white head that dissipates quickly into a cap, and there is a good amount of lacing left on the glass. Aroma has pine and citrus notes dominating with grapefruit, toffee and resin in the background. Taste is primarily bitter, but there are some bready notes in the middle. Aftertaste is piney, and not much else. Body is a bit on the bigger side, but not up to par with most double IPAs out there.

Overall, this is probably my least favorite beer out of the pack, as well as one of my least favorite double IPAs out there. If you're a hop head like me though, don't let that deter you from giving the Hop-ology a try! You could always beer bong the Third Voyage.

One more tune before bed? Why not!

    Have a good week everyone!
    Cheers!
