Users in The Year in Beer: Breaking Down 2019 comments thread were recently discussing user demographics. Specifically age ranges. I broke it down in a reply, but the info really deserves its own post.

Age Range = BeerAdvocate | Google Analytics
    1. 25-34 = 31.01% | 37.43%
    2. 35-44 = 34.36% | 23.31%
    3. 45-54 = 17.96% | 15.62%
    4. 55-64 = 9.85% | 10.10%
    5. 65+ = 4.89% | 5.34%
    6. 18-24 = 1.03% | 8.19%
Rough percentages here. Our numbers are based on all users who entered their date of birth, and Google Analytics numbers are based on anonymized data gathered from numerous sources within the last year. (Recently updated with more accurate results.)

Most people think BeerAdvocate is for older users, but the data suggests otherwise.

    What are your thoughts?

    Cheers!

I'm old. But not the oldest.

This is out of a total of how many BA's?

It's good to see the 25-34 group so High. I'm assuming that means there are a lot of younger beer drinkers out there who are very interested in the beer culture beyond your typical AAL's.

The data is based on hundreds of thousands of registered users and tens of millions of visitors.

S**t! I'll be moving from Cat. 3 to Cat. 4 as of late-Febrewary!

I was surprised, too, since most of the conversations I follow seem to be folk in the mid age and higher range. Maybe they're more active on the trade forums?

Exploring behavioral patterns on the site would be the next step, but a massive amount of our visitor traffic is from users looking for beers via Google (organic traffic), followed by direct traffic (people who are already in the know).

@Todd based on this thread, I was going to finally enable showing my age, but I see that this requires also enabling showing the month and day of your birthdate. How about a setting to only show our age, but not the exact date, since that can be used for identity theft?

The forum is third-party software and this would require altering its code. I don't see that happening for this.

Interesting. Thinking about current beer trends, maybe it shouldn't have been a surprise that there are a higher percentage of young craft beer drinkers on this site.

Umm... Site can't stop you from entering false data. Most websites think I was born on January 1, 1901 or January 1, [actual year of birth] if I want to let them know my approximate age. (pssst, my birthday is not on January 1st).

Good point. I'd have to have an admin do it though.

My birth date is already 30 years high on our marriage certificate. According to that, I'm 2 weeks younger than my son.

    Thanks for putting this out.
I expected expected 35-45-25-55-65-18, but I'm glad to see that almost 2/3's of members are young(ish). It's the base needed to ensure BA's growth and continued success.

That was going to be my question, data suggests more younger members, but which age range is most active?

Yes I too would hazard a guess that most active forum posters are in the older ranges. While the younger ranges are more likely to lurk and not post.
