Back with another, and it's mystery beer time!

Reviewed and rated blind. Let's see!

Very interesting on the nose. I'm immediately thinking Belgian Dubbel or Quad. Aroma includes dry spice, nuts, dark fruit, dark bread, banana. A bit of red wine or red grape. Musty.

Thin on the palate with a lot of bite. Very dry. Notes of cola, prune, toast, nuts, leather, bitter chocolate. Not a lot of alcohol bite. Slightly medicinal. Minor char.

Hmm, after the flavor profile, I'm thinking porter or dry Irish stout. It's a bit thin in color for a stout, however. My partner still thinks Belgian, and there's certainly a ton of prune and cola on the profile.

    Reveal:

Haw River Farmhouse Ales St. Benedict's Breakfast

A Dubbel with coffee and chocolate!

The coffee and chocolate definitely make this come across very much like a breakfast porter, while retaining the yeast influence of a classic Dubbel.

What a twist! I didn't see this coming. It all makes perfect sense, though: Belgian on the nose, but very roasty on the palate, while retaining that cola and prune.

Thanks, @MacMalt , for a very interesting journey on this one!

I always intended to send the Old Ale from Bonesaw as a mystery beer. This second one was a last minute decision as I was packing the box. It's certainly quirky. Apparently it's a year-round offering from Haw River so I may try it again when I'm in NC in January.

Watching Sunday morning football from Germany. Kickoff was at 730 MST.
Today's new beer is Aurora, a rice lager from Launching Pad Brewery in Aurora, CO.
    From Beer Drop.
Clear light gold color, small white head, a little bit of lace.
Aroma of tea and floral hops.
Taste of tea, late hop bitterness.
    Crisp and refreshing.

Greetings all from the great northwest where the Washington State Cougars are Bowl Game eligible after beating Arizona State. A couple more wins will get a better game and beating Washington would be awesome.

This weekend we have Voodoo Ranger Juicy Haze IPA.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/192/302437/

I'm not a big fan of the Voodoo Ranger line and this one is a little sweet and fruity for me.

    Until next time

[IMG] Gonna go ahead with the last Mystery Beer from by buddy Terry to kick off today.

Pours a nice copper with a finger and a half of white foam. Reduced to a decent cap with some soapy lacing. Nose is baked bread, pepper, some sweeter floral notes, and earth. Taste follows suit with a bit more “spice” and finishes bitter. Feel is crisp but smooth. Very enjoyable beer, definitely a lager of some sort.
[IMG] The reveal is Chuckanut Rye Lager. Thanks so much @BBThunderbolt. The Rolling Rock print off for the label was awesome. Cheers all.

Thick orange color with nice white head.
    Really nice soft, creamy mouthfeel.
Taste is fresh oranges, mango's and tangerines. Has a touch of sweetness at first that balances perfectly with a slightly bitter orange juice finish. Love the prickly lingering finish!
Also like that this beer is "only" 6.8% ABV. Sometimes the 8% ABV & up beers are a little more alcohol than I want.
    This is delicious!

Sorry for crappy pic.. my photo skills are about as good as my review skills.

Greetings fellow NBSers! it's a beautifully clear and bright day here in the Fourth Corner, a bit chilly at about 45 degrees, but it's seasonable, and it could be much worse.

Today is only my second day off in the last 18, but, as it matches up with the Official Share Date of NBS BIF #16 (as I'm sure y'all have noted by now), it gives me the chance to knock back some of the brews I've gotten from @beergoot. I am starting with a very, very good Helles Lager from Hanabi Lager Company, Chevallier Helles.

Apparently, the Chevallier malt is an old one, and not widely used these days. The result though, is worth the effort: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/60429/621238/

    Actually from last night…
    [IMG]
Found at Floosa’s in Tuscaloosa Alabama.
Poured like old motor oil with almost as much carbonation. The taupe head almost appears but leaves decent lacing.
The aroma was caramel, at least that’s what my sniffer gave me. Made me a little worried.
The flavor was definitely more than caramel, though it was in there. The cocoa nibs gave some chocolate hints and coffee was either present or malt char bitterness gave me the impression. Caramel wafted through in a curious and tasty manner- likely because I started drinking it to cold and as it warmed it became more balanced.
The feel was excellent, nearly perfect viscosity provides an enjoyable sipping experience.
    Good beer,
    Cheers all!

Humble Forager/Angry Chair collab Swingin' Sticks Imperial Sweet Stout, 13% ABV. Pours black with a ring of bubbles, leaving an oily sheen instead of lacing. Nose is coconut, caramel and chocolate. Taste follows, plus nuts, with coconut up front, quite sweet, slightly bitter. Decent mouthfeel, overall excellent.

...glad you enjoyed that one...it seems to be a polarizing beer for some (if only for it's relatively high price)...personally, I think it's a great tasting beer although a nice Dovetail Helles or old school Scrimshaw North Coast Brewing works just as well for me...

2022 version described as a "French Toast Milk Stout" brewed with maple syrup, coffee, cinnamon, and natural flavors. 7.0% ABV.

Packaged on 8/24/22 - consumed on 11/13/22 - poured from a 16oz can into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Clear Van **** brown liquid with mahogany highlights and two fingers of almond soft peaks up top. Rich lacing; excellent retention.

Nutty, slighty fruity (berries), roast coffee aromatics along with faint maple candy and toasted malt.

Potent coffee upon first sip, with the maple syrup/brown sugar, cinnamon notes unfurling slowly behind. Medium finish with sweetness and bitterness returning in waves, vying for control. Reminds me a bit of a chain-coffee drink with too much Torani syrup added. Low hop presence; neutral yeast.

Medium-bodied, smooth, and creamy with just a touch of acidity. ABV well concealed.

A bit too much going on here - not bad, but happy I only bought a single.

Mystery beer - bottled in 2010

Well, when I was writing the review up of it, I guessed it was a Barleywine. It looked and smelled like one. Even tasted like one. Well:

I got the style wrong, but not too off the mark. I do like this beer, and I'm honored to try it.

    Mystery beer #3:

This review is written blind. I have no clue as to what it is when writing this. All I know is it was bottled in 2010.

    Looks - 4.5
Looking at this beer, it's a dark brown pour with a tan head, that didn't last long. Considering how old it is, I'm surprised there was any at all.The head dissipates into a ring around the edge of the glass. Just based on how it looked, I'm guessing barleywine.

    Aroma - 4.25

Lots of dark fruit aromas - figs, raisin, plum. Slight hint of sweetness on the aroma. The nose screams barleywine.

    Taste - 4.25

There's a good deal of the dark fruits that I got on the nose. Raisin, plum, figs all come into play here. There's a very slight bitterness that comes in on the backside. I doubt it could still be the hops, but, who knows. Some sweetness comes into play in the mix. I think it might barrel aged, not sure?

    Body - 4.25

This beer is boozy, I do get some burn to it that hits way in the back. Fairly good body.

    Overall - 4.25

Just guessing at how it poured, and the age of it, I'm guessing barleywine here. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. I also get the flavors of one. Whatever it is, I do like it.

I'm going to work on this for a while, but, I should be able to do at least one more this weekend.

Finally getting to a beer this weekend….

This is Red Tape Paunnat Saison. This is a saison brewed in Toronto by a tiny nano-brewery that is owned by a couple with strong ties to Nunavut. The beer is brewed with Paunnat flowers harvested by one half of that couple while on a visit up to Nunavut a couple months back. While there is a brewing company located in Nunavut, getting their beer is impossible without making the trek up there. This beer from Red Tape is about as close to a Nunavut ‘tick’ most are likely to get.

I’ve sent, and will be sending a couple more of these around to NBW BIF participants. @jonphisher reviewed this one either last week or the week before.

Pours a hazy gold with a big frothy head that dissipates very slowly. There is a slight pink/orange colour to this beer. Visually appealing.

The beer gives off gentle yeasty saison aromas A little spiciness. Some bubble gum. Not much of a floral note to my nose, but it is earthy/grassy. I don’t know what a Paunnat flower smells like so can’t really say if I’m getting that.

A spicy bite up front. That grassy/earthy quality is more pronounced than on the nose. Again, any floral quality is limited. I like this.

Medium bodied with a creamier finish. Pleasant and enjoyable.

As a rather unique beer, this was both exciting to try and very enjoyable. I’ve had several beers from Red Tape and they have all been decent to good. Nothing exceptional, but nothing bad. This is probably my favourite to date.

Assuming all goes according to plan, I have an American IPA and a Canadian BA Vanilla Stout lined up for later.

    Cheers!

Hey 4 pages already, new beers are having a good weekend.
Just in time for Veteran's Day, Beer'd Brewing has released an annual beer with proceeds that go to vet charities. Despite this being the 5th edition, I was not aware of this in previous years. Here we go.

Poured from a 16oz can to a Nonic at fridge temp. Can is stamped 11/02/22 THANKS TO ALL WHO SERVED.
Body is a medium gold, hazy but translucent. With an average pour a 2.5-inch head forms that is just slightly off pure white and is quite puffy. This head fades in due time but lacing is pretty strong throughout the session even without swirling the glass.
Aroma is citrus pithy and there is mild dankness.
The taste is nice and bitter. Despite the hazy appearance this is pretty west coast. Citrus pith is there but so is lime juice in mid-taste the finish is ofcourse dry.
The mouthfeel is medium with a hint of hop oiliness. Carbonation helps accentuate the dry finish.
A pretty good hazy west coast IPA.

It is afternoon time on New Beer Sunday!
Is there no finer time to live? Ah how I look forward to this thread week after week since it first started 200 years ago now

    Time for a beer indeed!

    James Ready 5.5 November 2022

Poured cold into a pub style lager glass; This lager pour's with roaring snap crackle pop carbonation. Large bubbles in the glass float up into a big fluffy sticky merangue white head.
From 2ft away I can smell a burst of grassy barn yard funk with hints of skunk and nesting. A blend of straw and Cascade hops are all over the nose. I like it! Its everything off the farm except corn and that's mighty fine.
Taste is coming alive in the glass. A bigger lager beer that has a bit of spice in its simple hop bite against light biscuit and cracker 2 row malts.
The combination of light might and salt and peppery hops coat the roof of the mouth and finish of with an bite just short of astringent.
This staple beer of James Ready Brewing company hasn't lost it touch. I could easily see from the past Navy personell in the harbour in Halifax with a round table full of glasses ordering this by the table full with salted herrings.
James Ready 5.5 is a fine lager beer. I could see this beer going well also with a heaping plate of spaghetti and meatballs.

Good Sunday Afternoon NBS/nbw and thanks to our esteemed colleague @Roguer for hosting this week. I have to say it is fun watching all the BIF highjinks unfolding here. Great job all.
Todays offering is from Seven Saws Brewing , Holden Ma.
A very good West Coast style IPA
CTZ, Centennial, and Cascade are the hops, solid malt base, not full of Crystal for sure, and frankly I welcome that.

Poured from a 16 oz can , undated, and purchased at the brewery.
A - Lovely late sunflower color, excellent clarity, active carbonation feeds a never leaving thick white cap.
S - Pine, a bit of lemon, papaya, with a spicy white pepper. Lightly roast malts do indeed balance this one with a solid push back against that bitter assault.
T - All of the aromatics, with a noticable grapefruit rine bite.
M - Medium in body, on the creamy side for a beer with such a (beautiful) bitter bite.
    Finish is clean and dry.
O - A wonderful West Coast representation, and one I will return to purchase again

Crystal clear, pale yellow body; relatively sparse carbonation; 1 1/2 thick head, dense and semi-creamy, white, long lasting. Pleasing lightly toasted malt nose; light noble hop aroma. Balanced flavors with a light biscuit underpinning; hop bitterness starts quietly but builds to a medium intensity; a bit grassy with a quiet black pepper note. Medium-light mouthfeel; crisp; a touch of dryness lingers long into the finish.

    A pleasant yet unassuming pilsner.
